WORKING WITH OUR PROMOTIONAL CD'S

by Dwight L. Quinn
10/24/2013

In some industries, it's call a "test drive,"" try it on and see how it fits," taste it,"
and so on, but in the music industry it's "listen to this," this is where the promo
copy, hard copy, radio copy, just a few names used, enters and facilitates this action.
The composition embodied in a record,cd and today an mp3, are the most familiar
format used to demostrate the composition's quality.  A Promotional copy,  is
a, not-for-sale goods, it's "Free" goods.

We try to maintain a sufficient supply of promotional recordings in our warehouse
to meet our promotional needs. This method save us time and money and allow
us to better service our radio, retail, press and media customers when they request
promotional copies from us, to be sent to them.

We make Promotional Copies of our New Releases and Back Catalog available
to radio, retailers and press online at our website www.quinnrecords.net 24/7 to
help facilitate their needs for new music.

We make sure our distributor know what our marketing and promotional plans
are in advance of a project being released, giving them a heads-up so that the
distributor can make it's distributing plan accordingly. We will, most of the time
ship  promotionals copies ourselves to  key media coustomers and provide
the distributor with the information,so to prevent a duplication of work.

With us maintaining and operating an efficient Promotional Copy Program is just
another way that we at Quinn Records TM keeps our music available and coming
to you. We have a Niche, and a Niche is valuable. Our Promotional Copies are a
way for the user to say to it's end-user, "Listen to this".

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT QUINN RECORDS TM'S RECORD PROMOTIONS

by Dwight L. Quinn
10-21-2013

Our Promotion Department, headed by Ronald Rayford a.k.a Ron Ray is busier than a  bear with a sweet tooth, being chased by a swam of mad honey bees, he's on the move. The Promotion Department is key to our business. Because when Ron is successful in securing airplay for our records, than our Marketing Plan comes alive.

The Promotion Department is working several releases for the label today, that is doing rather well. They are targeted to Radio,s  Blues n' Soul Music Shows both domestic and international those projects are, GO SLOW-Blues Crossing, " The Soul of A Man by KL&R2," " Keep On Keeping, by James Gilbert. We have a great sound being released into the Blues n' Soul Marketplace this fall/winter period and we're all excited and elated about the already  positive feedback the we are getting from industry movers and shakers.
The songs that are getting most of the industry M&S's buzz  are James Gilberts,"Blues This Morning," Osee Anderson's,"Breaking Up Somebodys Home," KL&R2's,"I Got My Swag On" and Mississippi Red's,"Send Me Some To Love". Quinn is already entering into two non-exclusive Master License Deals with two international Music companies for the territories of India and Spain.

Competition is heavy, record labels, big and small, are releasing several hundred CDs each and every week. And the Radio stations are over-whammed with these records. So when Ron get one of  our songs added to the Radio stations playlists this is an outstanding victory.
A “playlist” is a list of songs a station plays and the playlist is created every week or so  by the station’s Music Director. Ron gets real passionate with his sales pitch to MD's, Pd's and Djs when he's communicating a Quinn Records TM recording it gets us a chance to be heard by the radio station’s Music and Program Directors.

Just like sales people our Ron don't let any grass grow under his feet. Ron is always pitching a Quinn Records TM recording may it be a blues, a gospel, a jazz or a soul project it doen't matters. If you’ve ever had any experience selling anything, then you know how important enthusiasm and a positive attitude are in convincing potential customers to buy your product. Our Promo Rep is just that way he stays  in a positive, upbeat and motivated frame of mind. He know that, this is an important element in the music business. And,
Ron knows also, that we’re not the only label releasing new music every week, and that radio stations can only play a few of these new songs at a time so,it's not personal, it's just business as usual .

Promotion at Quinn Records TM goe's a bit further than  describing the work done by Ron to get radio airplay for our releases.
The Promo Rep” is the companies breathing apparatus, pitch man,the spokes person who present the label’s new releases to radio stations with the intent to build a relationship that would allow us to place products that would both provide entertainment to the exsisting listeners as well as attract new listeners by playing the songs the we selects for promotion.
Quinn Records TM rely on it's Promo Rep. to  decide very carefully what specific songs from an artist's new record would most likely fit the radio station’s format and attract the listener’s attention.

Keeping the human-element alive, well and active in our Record Promotion  Progam is still the number one strategy  used  in our Record Promotional planning. It's nothing more powerful and enjoyable than visiting the Stations face-to-face and learning just what the Market is really like from a birds-eye view. We do every thing possible to make sure face-to face contact with the Radio Station stays our utmost priority.

To add even more  convenience for the commercial customer in our Record Promotion Program, we created an online page at our website, that's dedicated to the Radio MD's.PD,s, DJ's, Press and Retail  commercial customer where they can go 24/7 and request any Promo Copy that they want and Ron will send it out to them asap. All they do is go to our website, login set up an account, than go to the  Radio,Press,Retail link and order. The CD is free and we ship it free.

The Promotion Department is the arm of the company that makes sure that our records are at the Radio Stations that we service, and are available for airplay.

KEVIN WHEELER/KL&R2 CAMP DEBUTED A NEW TRACK TODAY.

by Dwight L. Quinn

The music pro-lif-er-ators over at the Kevin Wheeler/KL&R2 camp debuted a new track today targeted to the audiences of the world’s leading Soul n' Blues guru, the late great Solomon Burke.

” Launched as a tribute recognizing Mr. Burke's great contribution to the art and to the soul n' blues music industry, Kevin's team's aim is to set out and re-discover the profound life impact of this icon works.

The track was made into a medley of songs selected from a broad collection of world-class hits, made famous by Mr. Burke and were fan favorites exclusively for Soul n' blues users. The KL team titled the new track," The Soul of A Man (Medley of Songs by Solomon Burke) the mix of medelys includes, If You Need Me,Tonights The Night and The Price I had To Pay and clocks in at 4:08 minutes in length.

The songs intro begins with a thundering drum role that would catch the listener by surprise at first, and the second wave Kevin makes this heart-felt announcement, dedicating the song to Mr. Solomon Burke and praying that he rest-in-peace and then he proceeds on into these touching medlodies of moving songs, consisting of “If You Need Me","Tonights The Night," and" The Price I Had To pay". “The Soul of A Man",(The Medleys of Solomon Burke) will rank high among the great works of Kevin Wheeler & KL&R2.

We commend him for his great courage and love for the art and music to take on such a huge undertaking in the effort to keep the Works of a past legend such as Solomon Burke, alive. It ends with a higher, powerful tenor rises that is the signature of Kevin's large vocal ranges that pushes the song skyward as the minutes ticks down to closing of the popular soul medleys the esteemed brava that Kevin has played to crowds worldwide.

“I was always a Traditional Quartet Gospel singer before I was making soul tracks,” said Kevin. “The Traditional Quartet Gospel singing is the backbone of soul music. Gospel [have] been the direct contributor, and soul n'blues are the way I can bring fresh sounds to people. Real Soul feeling don’t wait for the right timing, it just lets go.. Soul music gives me an audience of stable adults that LOVE soul and dance music from urban stlye genres. I now have the ability to share that soulful and enlightening vision in its purest form with all my fans.

DISCOVERING AND SIGNING THE BEST TALENT

 by Dwight L. Quinn

Discovering and signing the best artistic talent is the motor that keeps a record company running. “Breaking acts and protecting A&R will always be the lifeblood of our culture. It’s at the heart of every conversation we have”, says Dwight Quinn, CEO of Quinn Records TM.
There is fierce competition between record companies to discover and sign the best new artistic talent. We are constantly scouting for performers that have the potential to develop their career in music to the highest level. Traditional A&R methods are today complemented by other ways of finding and signing talent.

The way to find talent nowadays is completely different from 25 years ago when bars or small venues were the places to find artists and musicians. Now there are a multitude of different ways. But at the end of the day, no matter how we find talent, it’s about someone making music and someone feeling the emotion that it creates. The internet is often the first port of call for Quinn's A&R looking to find the top performers of tomorrow.

The internet has made pre-selection much easier. Instead of travelling to every gig, you can do a lot of the groundwork online, checking out bands on their homepage, Myspace or YouTube.

The internet is where you first hear of a buzz around an artist. We’re not the sort of label that looks for someone who’s got two million hits on YouTube, but we do look for an online buzz. While the internet can cut out some of the legwork for our A&R executive, viewing artists online is no substitute for seeing them live and developing a personal relationship with them.

Evaluating artistic talent is a subjective process, but Quinn agree we are looking for something beyond technical competence when searching for an act to sign. We are looking for an artist that can move music fans. We looking for empirical evidence of a connection between the audience and the artist.

THE INTERGRATION BETWEEN APP AND AUTO ALL SUGGEST A STREAMING MUSIC MARKET

by Dwight L. Quinn

Despite gloomy reports coming from the state of the economy this year there's been quite interesting news all positive and complementary. Here are recent highlights reported by the RIAA :
•    riaa reported their 2012 year-end sales and shipment numbers, including the increasing importance of streaming music – so-called “access models” which now total $1 billion in revenues
•    new data from NPD finding that “subscription-based and free

  • Internet radio services accounted for nearly one quarter (23 percent) of the average weekly music listening time among consumers between the ages of 13 and 35, an increase from a share of 17 percent the previous  year”
  • booming car sales so far in 2013, which, as  Billboard observed, portend further positive news for music business:

First, better integration between app and auto will mean more subscribers
to services like Spotify, which allow smartphone owners to take music into
the vehicle via cached files. Second, more listening to Internet radio over
broadcast radio means more money. Whereas broadcast radio lacks a
performance right, digital services have a performance right that results in
royalties paid for Internet radio listening.

Jonathan Lamy, EVP, Communications, RIAA said, that this is a positive virtuous
cycle, with each set of data points and facts further validating each other and the
underlying proposition.
RIAA year-end 2012 numbers showed substantial growth in these access models.
NPD 2012 data showed more usage of and time spent with these types of services.
And a booming car industry is leveraging fans’ appetite for these services and the
popularity of music generally to offer more value to would-be customers.
This year  auto show, one companies touted music app integration as one of their
key selling points.
All these developments are interrelated, and all suggest a streaming music market
that will only further expand in importance and reach.

HOW DO A SONG MAKE IT ON OUR TOP 10?

by Dwight L. Quinn

Each week (Monday and Friday), Quinn Records TM puts together a chart of it's top 10 most popular songs based on a national sample of top 10 radio airplay, top 10 radio playlists, and music sales. Since our Top 10 comes from the 220 radio stations, APD,89 Digital Companies,YouTube Reporting, 40 Cable TV Channels tracked each week, let's look at how our tracking is compiled.
First, there is airplay. What songs of ours that is actually being played on the radio and on music video channels on TV and screaming? Frequent calls to program directors and disc jockeys that reports and have their finger on the music, this is our good measure of what their listeners like. Airplay is tracked through our in-house Radio trackers, Air Play Direct (APD), YouTube and Broadcast Data Systems (BDS), run by Nielsen. BDS uses digital pattern-recognition technology to identify songs that are played on radio stations and music video TV channels across the United States and Canada. With the combination of Physical tracking a.k.a Manual tracking and the incorporation of tracking Technology, we've been able to track 24 hours a day, seven days a week, following over 220 targeted Radio Stations,APD,Digital Distributor,Cable TV YouTube and Spotify weekly.

Our Radio Promotions Department manual tracking consist of Playlists and verbal reporting from Radio with emphasis placed on obtaining as close as possible the number of people listening to a the station and we would multiply that number by the number of times one of our songs are played.

When the company record a new song, a copy of the recording is sent to BDS so it can be encoded and tracked by its system on the stations it monitors. This data is used not only by Quinn in compiling our weekly Top 10 chart, but also by record company executives, radio stations, publishing firms, performance rights organizations (to calculate performance royalties), music retailers, independent promoters, film and TV producers, and artist managers.

Another measure of what song of ours that is hot and what people are buying. To find out what music is selling in record stores, Quinn goes to Sound Scan  Nielsen Sound Scan is an information system that tracks the sales of music and music videos throughout the United States and Canada. By scanning the bar codes, they can collect sales information from cash registers each week from over 14,000 retail, mass merchant, and non-traditional sources such as online stores, concert sales, etc. The data is compiled and used in positioning the song on our Top 10 each Monday and Friday. Like BDS data, the data from Sound Scan is also very valuable for us in compiling a clear Top 10 Song Chart.

Our method for compiling our Top 10 Song chart have gone through a change or two over the past five years. Since publicizing our Radio Promotions Reports and Activities as a Promotional tool, we followed the foot prints of the icon of Charts, Billboard  we to changed the weighting of airplay versus sales in the compiling our Top 10 Song Chart. We found through researching and practical experiences that tracking a single song through album sales isn't exactly accurate, singles sales have always been used to track the sales side of song popularity. But, since only about 20% of people actually buy singles and over 90% listen to the radio, it made sense for us too, to alter the ratio of points. Now, the overall points are weighted to 20% sales and 80% airplay.

Quinn's Top 10 Song Chart is an important and valuable tool that let our fans, user of our music, music retailers, radio stations, promoters, film and TV producers, artist managers know what kind of music that we offer and how the music that we offer is performing in the very highly competitive music marketplace. The information that our Top 10 Song Chart gives to the Buyer is precious, it gives the Buyer the kind of Education that he or she needs to make the right Buying decision.

Quinn bases its Top 10 Song charts on its own prerecorded music and what is already being played on the radio and purchased in music stores, this is also the avenue to how radio stations find out about our new music.

HOW I POSITIONED OUR BRAND

by Dwight L. Quinn

I remember when I opened the label several years ago.
As a team we were working on how we wanted to position the label, looking for the
emotional benefit that we could offer to our customers. We finally landed on "We'll give you what you want" as our positioning. We never used it as a tagline, but more as a positioning statement for how we would serve up what we offered customers.

Many of our customers were mid-size independent retail record stores, operating in small and large urban cities. The idea of helping them to get the kind of music that they wanted was engaging.
Our work would get them track able sales results and they would recognized that. The fact that
we were and still are today a brand promotion label gave our positioning statement double meaning.
Once it caught on, our brand's positioning became the basis for building the brand experience
across our entire marketing plan. We realized that the key was to make sure that our actual brand experience delivers on what was intended in the positioning.

In the label at the time, we made sure we helped our customers showcase and display our products to get the recognition they needed in order to generate a sale. We make a big deal when one of our customers sale our products by celebrating every successful sale. It became part of our personality and part of the experience of working with us. This came directly out of our positioning statement:"We'll give you what you want."

Take a look at our brand and what we've done for positioning. Notice,
our tagline is  a big hint:

Quinn Records TM: "Where the sound of blues, gospel, jazz and soul music is made."

Notice the level of emotion in each of our tagline, which essentially highlights our brand's
positioning.

Here's how we translate the tagline into our positioning statements:

Quinn Records TM: Makes you feel like you'll get what you asked for.

We digs deep into the emotional benefit that we offer to our customers. We're always thinking
about how we want our customer to feel about us, every time they think about us. We tried to
capture that in a brief statement that best describes what we can offer, and keep a list of  options on hand. And throw them out to the team and do a little brainstorming.
It's makes for a lot of fun, especially when those creative juices start flowing and ideas comes from seemly out of nowhere.

IT'S MUSIC BUSINESS TODAY!

by Dwight L. Quinn

As the model for a label has changed, so has the role of the artist in the industry.
Artists today are more powerful than ever, noting that an active Artist can reach
high on Charts today with very little traditional radio or other marketing.
They are business people, marketers... They know how to relate to their audience
and know how to connect properly. Selling "Show Tickets" is the Artist goal. The
income is huge for an Artist who sells from 6,000 to 28,000 tickets per year with a
indie Label.
Quinn Records TM and other  different independent labels have different programs
and signing with John Doe label, for example, is not the same as signing with Willie Earl
records. Artists need to be aware of which indie labels do what best before signing a deal.
An Artist that's into Techno Soul is not going to do well with a Traditional Blues indie Label.

And with today's artists having more options than ever of how to release their music,
The old record contracts are being  tossed aside in favor of a more
egalitarian split -- and with digital platforms becoming ubiquitous, the differences between
major labels and indies will be reduced. Yet the role of the label -- as the vessel, the support
structure and the team assisting the artist in achieving success -- will not be going away.

The power is and always have been with the artist "but the infrastructure and guidance
of a label is still a very important and necessary role in the music industry."

WAS A REGULAR ON THE CHIT'LIN CIRCUIT.

by Dwight Quinn

Freddie King was Born in Gilmer, Texas, Sept. 3, 1934, King was six years old when his uncle taught him how to play a guitar.Lil Aaron said, that this is where Freddie got his style of guitar playing from his uncle teaching.
Still a teenager Freddie left Gilmer,Texas and moved to Chicago, where he got into the urban Blues scene, going to clubs, sitting in with bands and eventually forming his own band, The Every Hour Blues Boys.
He began working as a Studio musician, doing  sessions for than independent label Parrot Records.King auditioned for Chess Records, but was turned down, because it was said that he sounded too much like the then up coming blues artist Riley B. King a.k.a B.B. King.

He finally made his solo debut, as Freddy King in 1956 — he began spelling his name Freddie King in
1968 — with the single “Country Boy,” a duet with Margaret Whitfield, for El Bee Records.
Success was still a few years off. In 1960, he signed with Federal Records, a subsidiary of Syd Nathan’s
King Records label — a good omen, although his first single for the label, “Have You Ever Loved A Woman” (originally written by Billy Miles) made little impression. King began 1961 with “You’ve Got To Love Her With A Feeling,” which reached No. 93, then had his biggest pop-chart success with “Hide Away,” named after the Chicago bar Mel’s Hide Away Lounge. The swinging instrumental, partly drawn on other blues licks, was King’s sole Top 40 entry, peaking at No. 29 (and reaching No. 5 on the R&B charts); “San-Ho-Zay,” also released in 1961, just missed the Top 40 at No. 47 (No. 4 R&B). King alternated between releasing vocal and instrumental material, as evidenced by the albums he released in 1961: “Freddy King Sings” and “Let’s Hide Away and Dance Away With Freddy King: Strictly Instrumental.” King stayed with Federal until 1968.

A regular on the Chitlin’ Circuit, King landed a gig in 1966 in the The Beat Boys, the house band of the R&B TV show “The !!!! Beat” (the band was led by Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown). His stint with the show paved the way for a contract with Atlantic Records, which released the albums “Freddie King is a Blues Master” and “My Feeling for the Blues” in 1968. That same year, King did his first overseas tour to a warm welcome. There was a blues boom in Britain, and aficionados were already fans of King’s work.

“Hide Away” was covered by John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers on the 1966 album “Bluesbreakers With Eric Clapton,” and two other King numbers, “The Stumble” and “Someday After Awhile (You’ll Be Sorry)” were on the Mayall & The Bluesbreakers 1967 album “A Hard Road” (this time with Peter Green on guitar). “Have You Ever Loved A Woman” also would appear on Derek And The Dominos’ 1970 album “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs,” and became a live favorite of Clapton’s. It was then that King began crossing over into the rock market. He signed with Leon Russell’s label, Shelter Records. Russell was very involved with King’s Shelter albums; he produced, performed and wrote songs for “Getting Ready” (1971), “Texas Cannonball” (1972) and “Woman Across The River” (1973, which reached No. 54 R&B,
No. 158 pop). “Getting Ready” featured another of King’s signature songs, “Going Down.”

The rock influences were now on the forefront, and King began playing for more white rock audiences. Grand Funk Railroad, which toured with King, even name checked him in their song, “We’re An American Band”: “Up all night with Freddie King/I got to tell you, poker’s his thing.” King also toured with Clapton and shared the stage with Led Zeppelin.

There was no shortage of musicians who wanted to work with King; both Clapton and Bobby Tench of The Jeff Beck Group appear on King’s 1974 album “Burglar.” Tench also appears on 1975’s “Larger Than Life” (the last album released during King’s lifetime, which reached No. 53 R&B).
King was considered the most emotive of the “Three Kings.” His singing has a pronounced rawness, and his guitar work is distinctive thanks to his use of thumb and finger picks (in contrast to B.B. King’s single-string style).

King’s primary means of making money was through touring, and he spent most of his years on the road. As a result, his health began to decline, and in 1976, he began having problems with stomach ulcers. King died Dec. 28, 1976, at the age of 42, suffering complications from his ulcers and pancreatic.
Freddie King didn't become a big name like,Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and B.B. King. He got life with the young rockers such as George Harrison, Jimi Hendricks, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck they all displayed his influence in their playing and Freddie won a new audience.
