QUINN RECORDS TM RELEASES NEW ALBUM ON NOVEMBER 5 THE BEST OF OLIVER JOHNSON

by Dwight L. Quinn
09/29/2013

Two time Sodexho Award-winning blues/soul/jazz trumpeter Oliver Johnson is  one of the most proliferated trumpet greats of all time....Oliver, known as the guy who brought the trumpet to Soul." On November 5, 2013 Quinn Records TM will release The Best of Oliver Johnson, a rocking collection of Oliver's top tunes  celebrating Oliver's six years as an international blues/soul/jazz recording artist and a professional musical experience that started  at age seven. Recorded in Centreville, Illinois and produced by Quinn Records TM producer/ songwriter/ label owner,Dwight L. Quinn the album is a mix of blues and soul sounds that allowed Oliver to stretch his thundering-trumpet solo's to all time highs.

Oliver wrote,You Make Me Sing The Blues track, Quinn wrote five additional tracks and the album was topped with four covers. The songs were collected from Oliver's best-sellers. The Best of Oliver Johnson will bring Oliver's discography to nine albums, since signing with Quinn Records TM in 2004.

Making up the core of Oliver's Nite Train band on the CD are Benton (drums), Henry Taylor
(guitar), Oliver (keyboards), Nephew Davis (bass), Oliver (Trumpet). Oswald Peters and Julio each add guitar to three tracks. Oliver, who vocal duties are to wam-bam the audience, was inspired by the sessions to monorate in the songs, something that ole band musician use to do, talk to the audience and/or the band members while the song is in play, singing If You Repay Evil For Good,Oliver would break out and direct his Nite Train Band and shout out to whoever is listening that it's hot up in here, making The Best of Oliver Johnson the most personal, free-jamming and just plain fun recording of  his nearly four-decade career.

According to Oliver, "I have a personal attachment to the music in this album. Mr. Harry Turner my music teacher while in high school would always reminded me that music is about feeling -- And I don't ever forget that".
My hope is that everyone who listens to,The Best of Oliver Johnson feels it. I know that I sure did!" Oliver  is signed with the prestigious LA De Da Entertainment and Events in St. Louis and he will be touring nationally in support of the album.

Oliver's history is proof that dreams do come true. Oliver at age six, began his study as a vocalist with his mother,Roberta Johnson of Uttica Mississippi. Roberta, who was a gospel church singer, also introduced Oliver to the music of performers like Louis Armstrong and Nancy Wilson. When Oliver was eight years old, a famous jazz organist Tabb Smith and his groups use to rehearse in Oliver's home. At ten years old, Oliver started the study of the trumpet with Mr. Harry Turner of the Count Basie Band.

Oliver's first professional performances at thirteen, started at the Cosmo Hall in East St. Louis that featured regular acts like Ike Turner, Johnny Johnson, Chuck Berry, Little Milton and Albert King.
After high school Oliver started touring with Waestmoreland, Inc. The Band that eventually became Albert King's Band included Motown-Recording regulars like, Tyrone Perry and Paul Jackson. For twelve years (12) Oliver toured throughout UK and Japan playing trumpet and singing with Mel and Tim (Backfield In Motion), Joe Tex (Skinny Leg's and All), Shirley Brown (Woman to Woman), Albert King (Born Under A Bad Sign), Gladys Knight & The Pips, Rufus Thomas (Walking The Dog), and Carla Thomas (B-A-B-Y Baby).

Aside from Oliver's regular performances he has recently played the Black Rep's Production "One More Time". Oliver is mostly known for his versatility in many different music formats, from Be-bop trumpet to Falsetto R&B singing.

He first recorded under his own name with his Cheese and Butter album a self-produced, project with the help of Roberta his mother. Hard Times! was his second project, Hard Times was later picked up and re-issued on Quinn Records TM label.
He made his first solo albums two in the late 1990's, with bands featuring outstanding musicians, including famed guitarist Oswald Peters. With his be-bop sound and rockin blues band (later featuring side man Henry Taylor), it wasn't long before he was adopted by the southern soul audience as one of their own. .

Oliver signed with Quinn Records TM in 2004, releasing Hard Times: On The Other Side of Midnight!
(which earned him his two Sodexho Lifetime Achievement Awards). In 2007 he joined the late Earl Wilson Jr. Gateway Classics annual events!. He won a Sedexho Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 for his dedication to the arts.
During the mid-2000s Oliver has continued recording and touring relentlessly, playing clubs, concert halls and festivals all over, electrifying audiences wherever he performs. Oliver's 2012 Argosy Casino Show featuring the legendary Richard Brooks original founding member of infamous,Impressions was hailed as an over-whelming success.
Oliver and his Nite Train Band continues to tour and work nitely in clues and venues all around the St. Louis City and Metropolitan area and shortly Oliver  will be touring  internationally with his own band.

The Best of Oliver Johnson proves Oliver Johnson's be-bop rocking trumpeting  is a true force of nature, while his songs and lyrics are a living history of the blues n soul earning him the reprutation as the guy who bought the trumpet to soul.
His thundering trumpet like Gabriel's is blowing the walls of blues and soul away. His improvisations on the blues and soul are full of fun and good humor. The blues and soul don't get much better."

THE INTERGRATION BETWEEN APP AND AUTO ALL SUGGEST A STREAMING MUSIC MARKET

by Dwight L. Quinn

Despite gloomy reports coming from the state of the economy this year there's been quite interesting news all positive and complementary. Here are recent highlights reported by the RIAA :
•    riaa reported their 2012 year-end sales and shipment numbers, including the increasing importance of streaming music – so-called “access models” which now total $1 billion in revenues
•    new data from NPD finding that “subscription-based and free

  • Internet radio services accounted for nearly one quarter (23 percent) of the average weekly music listening time among consumers between the ages of 13 and 35, an increase from a share of 17 percent the previous  year”
  • booming car sales so far in 2013, which, as  Billboard observed, portend further positive news for music business:

First, better integration between app and auto will mean more subscribers
to services like Spotify, which allow smartphone owners to take music into
the vehicle via cached files. Second, more listening to Internet radio over
broadcast radio means more money. Whereas broadcast radio lacks a
performance right, digital services have a performance right that results in
royalties paid for Internet radio listening.

Jonathan Lamy, EVP, Communications, RIAA said, that this is a positive virtuous
cycle, with each set of data points and facts further validating each other and the
underlying proposition.
RIAA year-end 2012 numbers showed substantial growth in these access models.
NPD 2012 data showed more usage of and time spent with these types of services.
And a booming car industry is leveraging fans’ appetite for these services and the
popularity of music generally to offer more value to would-be customers.
This year  auto show, one companies touted music app integration as one of their
key selling points.
All these developments are interrelated, and all suggest a streaming music market
that will only further expand in importance and reach.

THE MARKETING MIX USED TO PROMOTE OUR ARTISTS

by Dwight L. Quinn

Promoting and marketing of the artist is among one of the largest line item spending accounts in Quinn Records TM’s budget. In a extemely high competitive market it is important for artists to benefit from having promotional support if they are to have the opportunity to build and connect with a large audience.

Today the marketing mix used to promote our artist to fans has changed dramatically over recent years. Social media channels now complement traditional gatekeepers such as radio and television. With an educated guess,we estimate that just five years ago 75 to 80 per cent of our marketing dollars spent was targeted at broadcast advertising, now this amount has fallen to less than 55 per cent of our marketing budget while the increase in online marketing will reach an expected equal balance between the two media mix of 50/50.

Social marketing is constantly growing. When we released Kevin Wheeler’s KL&R2 album, I Got My Swag On in 2010 among the top ten things we needed to do in promoting it was to include – the YouTube video (Quinn President Choice), and a music-targeted Facebook campaign, an Online marketing strategy. Several of the channels did not exist when their previous album, Par-Tae! Get Your Groove On  had been released five years earlier. This was also true when we released their latest album If You Need Me! In July, we again had to add several more new platforms to the mix.” The growth of online media has meant that we have to spend increasing resources to supply the content that these channels need. Dwight Quinn says: “The content that we have to create in the digital erea is probably two-fold in comparsion to what it was five years ago; with the people it has almost become a way of  life.” Ronnie Ray promotion manager Quinn Records TM agrees. “You have to be in your best creative-mode when you do social marketing for your artist, it has to be real-real, it has to be home-grown. It has to come from the artist. It can’t be just what we as a company feeds out to the fans. What’s the message, who is it coming from, how does it get to the consumer? We're planning in the very near future the creation of an entirely new digital department, with upto 10 people.

There is so much we can be doing with our artists, with their content and with their music.” New media channels offer the opportunity for us to communicate directly with our fans. “The internet has become the new television, with immediate feedback and real-time interaction.” No two promotional campaigns are the alike. Dwight says: “The real beauty of the music business is that there are no scripts. It’s about gut instinct and where ever the dice falls.

Why record companies are so relevant is that we can take more risks than any other industry.” In our experience and our research into this subject we,discovered that today promotional activities can often cover a broader range of activity than was once not the case, traditionally. Many artists such as our own, want to become involved in a range of areas, “Some of our artists want to create clothing lines, fragrants, produce their own materials and so forth, so we, like the Major labels are bringing in experts to offer directions to this new, artist goal along with giving to the artist all sort of advice that will assist the artist in obtaining their goals. So we're investing.

WE NOTICED A NEW NAME IN THE DIGITAL SERVICES
BUSINESS
by Dwight L. Quinn

Last month we noticed a new name added to the list of Digital Service companies selling Quinn Records TM music.
Of couse we're not there yet in terms of large revenues coming from the Digital stream, but it's clear to each and everyone of us in the record business that within the next five years,or so and
if not sooner,Digital Downloading when take the lead in being the main choice of accessing and aquiring  music by cusumers.
Digital has added a new dimension to the services record companies provide for artists. Digital accounted for 31 per cent of record companies’ trade revenues in 2011 and the major services expanded their reach from 23 to 58 countries in the
same year. While some services, such as AmazonMP3 or iTunes, effectively replicate the physical format market with consumers buying albums or singles, others, such as Deezer, Spotify and VEVO, rely on either advertising income, people paying a monthly subscription fee or some combination of both.
Such services are still in the early stages of development but offer the opportunity of global scale. Subscription services in June 2012 had an estimated 16 million subscribers globally, a number that has almost doubled in the last 18 months.
Many streaming services are relatively recent start-ups.
One of the largest services, Spotify, only opened in Germany, the world’s third largest music market, in March 2012.
Spotify is most developed in Sweden, where large numbers of consumers use the paid-for subscription tier of the service, we believes it has had a positive effect. “In Sweden, Spotify has changed the music business and made it a happy place to work again.
Now large numbers of people have a premium account, the revenue stream is fantastic. People listen to an album or song and put it on their playlist. They won’t stop listening to it. It’ll be giving the artist and Quinn Records TM and other record company a revenue stream for years.

New Digital Service companies are sprouting up all over the place and streaming, downloading and buying music from a IPad,IPhone and/ or Tablets is sooner than ever is fast becoming the the norm.

We at Quinn Records TM with our new mobil app is still making it easy or fans who are still hold fast to the interest of blues, gospel, jazz and soul music can have continuous access to our music.

Our mobile-app is the cusumers gateway to current information that includes: Quinn's Top-10 Song Chart, music news, current events,Quinn's President Choice, shop n' buy at Quinn store, new releases, coming soon, catalog, tickets, coupons,Facebook, Twitter, photos, artist tour schedule and free music downloads.

HOW DO A SONG MAKE IT ON OUR TOP 10?

by Dwight L. Quinn

Each week (Monday and Friday), Quinn Records TM puts together a chart of it's top 10 most popular songs based on a national sample of top 10 radio airplay, top 10 radio playlists, and music sales. Since our Top 10 comes from the 220 radio stations, APD,89 Digital Companies,YouTube Reporting, 40 Cable TV Channels tracked each week, let's look at how our tracking is compiled.
First, there is airplay. What songs of ours that is actually being played on the radio and on music video channels on TV and screaming? Frequent calls to program directors and disc jockeys that reports and have their finger on the music, this is our good measure of what their listeners like. Airplay is tracked through our in-house Radio trackers, Air Play Direct (APD), YouTube and Broadcast Data Systems (BDS), run by Nielsen. BDS uses digital pattern-recognition technology to identify songs that are played on radio stations and music video TV channels across the United States and Canada. With the combination of Physical tracking a.k.a Manual tracking and the incorporation of tracking Technology, we've been able to track 24 hours a day, seven days a week, following over 220 targeted Radio Stations,APD,Digital Distributor,Cable TV YouTube and Spotify weekly.

Our Radio Promotions Department manual tracking consist of Playlists and verbal reporting from Radio with emphasis placed on obtaining as close as possible the number of people listening to a the station and we would multiply that number by the number of times one of our songs are played.

When the company record a new song, a copy of the recording is sent to BDS so it can be encoded and tracked by its system on the stations it monitors. This data is used not only by Quinn in compiling our weekly Top 10 chart, but also by record company executives, radio stations, publishing firms, performance rights organizations (to calculate performance royalties), music retailers, independent promoters, film and TV producers, and artist managers.

Another measure of what song of ours that is hot and what people are buying. To find out what music is selling in record stores, Quinn goes to Sound Scan  Nielsen Sound Scan is an information system that tracks the sales of music and music videos throughout the United States and Canada. By scanning the bar codes, they can collect sales information from cash registers each week from over 14,000 retail, mass merchant, and non-traditional sources such as online stores, concert sales, etc. The data is compiled and used in positioning the song on our Top 10 each Monday and Friday. Like BDS data, the data from Sound Scan is also very valuable for us in compiling a clear Top 10 Song Chart.

Our method for compiling our Top 10 Song chart have gone through a change or two over the past five years. Since publicizing our Radio Promotions Reports and Activities as a Promotional tool, we followed the foot prints of the icon of Charts, Billboard  we to changed the weighting of airplay versus sales in the compiling our Top 10 Song Chart. We found through researching and practical experiences that tracking a single song through album sales isn't exactly accurate, singles sales have always been used to track the sales side of song popularity. But, since only about 20% of people actually buy singles and over 90% listen to the radio, it made sense for us too, to alter the ratio of points. Now, the overall points are weighted to 20% sales and 80% airplay.

Quinn's Top 10 Song Chart is an important and valuable tool that let our fans, user of our music, music retailers, radio stations, promoters, film and TV producers, artist managers know what kind of music that we offer and how the music that we offer is performing in the very highly competitive music marketplace. The information that our Top 10 Song Chart gives to the Buyer is precious, it gives the Buyer the kind of Education that he or she needs to make the right Buying decision.

Quinn bases its Top 10 Song charts on its own prerecorded music and what is already being played on the radio and purchased in music stores, this is also the avenue to how radio stations find out about our new music.

MY FAVORITE JUNK FOOD WAS A BOX OF CRACKER JACKS

by Dwight Quinn

I bet you didn't know that when ever you purchase a Quinn Records TM product, we always give the customer something Free, it just comes natural with the Company. The idea came about when I was a boy growing up in East St. Louis. My favorite junk food was a box of Cracker Jacks. What I became to love and appreciate about a box of Cracker jacks, is that it wasn't the fact that it was  a great tasting, lip-smacking snack with its sweet caramel covered popcorn flavor and roasted salted peanuts that blended well with popcorn, it was as I began to realize that with every box of Cracker jacks that you purchased there were always a prize in the box. It was Free, a plastic ring or a spinning top you  name it, it was the prize that excited us. And it soon became apparent that it was the FREE prizes that was drawing us kids to the Cracker Jacks, the prizes was creating the buzz and making for a grand conversation piece, a friend maker and so on. Well I took that Cracker Jacks mentality into the business with me and applied the same strategy here at Quinn Records TM. We appreciate the customer so much that it is always proper for us to give the customer something back. To show our deepest appreciation and thanks for their business.

After almost forty-two years in business we still get overly excited when customer buy from us. It's the "Cracker Jacks" in us.

And, please do take our "FREE SHIPPING" program seriously when a purchase of $99.99 is ringed up on our P O S Register. We will Ship your order anywhere in the greater U.S.A. FREE. QUINN RECEIVED SOME ENLIGHTENMENT FROM MARSHALL THOMPSON OF THE CHI-LITES

By Dwight L. Quinn

I'm just a bigger fan today as I was in years past of Groups like the Chi-lites out of Chicago, Illinois. I had the pleasure of speaking with Marshall Thompson Saturday by phone in great length. And I was totally delighted with the wisdom and enlightenment that I gained from my conversation with Marshall. He brought me out of that Old School mode and into the understanding of the now a day, what-you-should-know, about the entertainment climate the habits, attitudes and practices that influences the Live Music Market.

Well it soon became pretty clear that I had been walking around with blinders on, being distracted by the effects, and paying little or no attention to the, cause i.e.(the Market). We both agreed that the Music business has definitely changed and the audience (the Market) that we play to today is just as different as we were (the Market) in the 60's. I can't emphasize enough as to how different that we were. And it's that different that causes, change, how they buy, how they listen to music, how they move it around, what's acceptable today as opposed to what
was and wasn't acceptable yesteryear is 360 degrees different. But the fundamental foundation of the Business are still intact.
Marshall Thompson new Album, Hot On A Thing is riding on the waves of the today's sound but like a pro, Marshall carefully applied this legendary Groups signature-sound-style that is a legacy of the Chi-Lites.
For those of you, who haven't had the pleasure of hearing, Marshall's new Album, Hot On A Thing. I highly recommend you to click this link and Listen,

When You Strip A Way The Glamour.

by Dwight L. Quinn

You know the old wisdom "All that shine is not gold, and " Looks are Deceiving and so on. Well there's a whole lot of truth to those aged old pieces of wisdom. And I discovered it in my early days in the Music business, I came into the Business like most, totally with no reality at all, I told my reality to wait outside for me until I get back, I got this! Than all of a sudden I noticed that I went from eating choice cut fresh meat to can meat, potted meat, spam. I'm asking myself now what going wrong here, this is not the way it suppose to be, I'm in the record business. I' ll go to my office, put up the phone to make a call , no dial tone, so I leave but when I get the parking lot, guess what, my car is gone,so I calls the police so that I can make out a police report for a stolen car, well don't you have any idea who may have stolen your car the policeman would ask, and I would say yeah!,police would ask, than who and tell'em the Bank stole it. Man those days was rough when you leave reality waiting outside.
I'm glad of one if nothing, else, my father always taught me and brothers to honest with your self first and you'll find it easy to honest with others. I realized that I was going to succeed at this business unless I go back and get my reality back and than go forth.

Now I see my business as a business, a living entity that needs focused attention, that need to know not only who its customers are,but what they want, in terms of products and service. We don't second guest.
Don't be fooled Music is Entertaining but it takes Business management with planning to get it to and from the stag to the Bank.

I average 20 working hours a day, trying to get Quinn Records TM right,  right doesn't mean that we're doing something that is wrong, right in our strategy that means, simply staying on course with our idea and plan. We're not in the Hit making business, we don't trade on Wall Street,we're in the Listening business specializing in Artist Development and  make music for, as they use to call it,"turn-table" use and  for customer who only like new music in their favorite genre and wants it right now.

We're diverse, we build on diversification it gives us a broader base product line and allows us to keep niche music that identifies with an eager to served  Market making available the music that they are most familiar with thus rekindling again a useful and valuable product in today's  market.

WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS AM I REALLY IN ?

by Dwight L. Quinn

First, I want to began by wishing all of you a very Happy and Safe 4th of July. And despite how bad our Economic condition may seem, we have always managed to overcome adversities and bounce back, that is the American way and we should first above any and  all things be conscious of that fact.
I don't think that there is not a day that goes by that I don't asked the question,What kind of business am I really in? And I asked that question regularly because sometimes you can loose your direction or should I say focus as to what it is that you are doing and where are you going? Well, over the years I finally narrowed that question down to two simple words that I clearly understood and thus the enlightenment put me directly on track and I began to see clearly what kind of  business that I was really in. The business that I'm really in with Quinn records TM is, the listening business. Blues This Morning is a slow, moody soulful cut written by Eugene Smiley an awesome articulate song writer and composer.Smiley laid down a mixed of styles that you can easily pick on as you listen and involve with this song, for instant the piano part is much a Ray Charles signature, a melody that haunts you, and spells out Little Milton Campbell in all expects, the drive and mood puts you back to top of the sixties when Stax Records began to experiment with Soul and Specialty along with Peacock was putting a New spin on the way Blues licks was being laid down no more twelve bar Blues licks, the search was on for new sounding blues,Soul with deeper into the Church house. Blues This Morning got all of Old Soul flavor put into it. And James Gilbert a young up coming Bluester with powerful vocals is wailing out the sound that he heard from his mentors of the Blues and Soul arena. James has to be given an "E" for excellence for vocal job on Blues This Morning.

It's moody! It's the Blues."Blues This Morning CD.

Happy Fathers Day To The Fathers Who Helped Made Us, Quinn Records TM

NEWS UPDATE:

FATHERS DAY WEEKEND - Happy Fathers Day To The Fathers Who Helped Made Us, Quinn Records TM
From: Dwight Quinn,Founder/Quinn Records TM
I often think about the guys who came along during my earlier years in the business, who had the faith in my idea, enough so, to lend me their talent, knowledge and prudence that I still uses today. Starting with late Lil Aaron Mosby, through him I picked upon the humbleness that he presented also his deep undivided care and concerns that he had for other people. Those who knew Lil Aaron, while he was a live couldn't help from recognizing and picking upon , how polite and manner-able this man was, it just came natural for Lil Aaron to be polite. Lil Aaron never thought that he was a great Blues singer, he would always tell me Quinn,I don't get up there and sing, but instead I get up there and I talk to my audience. I learnt something new. The Late great Gospel singer,Reverend Anderson Sparks,a great motivator he believe in what we were trying to accomplish in the early days of our existence  and Rev. Sparks  jumped right into the business side of the company and things just flourish. Rev. Anderson Sparks is the person that was responsible for single-handily building the Gospel side of Quinn Records TM.  Until this day, I would had never have thought that a great Gospel singer as the late Rev.Anderson Sparks knew so much about the Record business as he did, he  taught me a lot about, the what and the way we do business today. Rev. Sparks understood the pros and cons of  marketing, promoting and the importance of artists in this business, keeping themselves highly visible, with the purpose of building huge fan bases the key necessity needed in order to build a stable career in the Entertainment business. And all the way up until his death, Rev. Sparks would always make it a practice to hand carry our promo records to Radio Stations all across the country between, pastoring his Church, recording and performing live shows. Because of that " don't ease up-until the job is done"mentality of Rev. Anderson Sparks we have little patient for sleepers. Other great Fathers like the late Terry"Dewey" Williams,"Jimmy Jones and my mentor and former coffee buddy the late Leroy Crisp, I credit these men with all the wisdom, faith helping hands that they reached out to me and Quinn Records TM and made us what we are today. We're not a big Company in size, we're  just a Company that do big things. And I say,Happy Fathers Day to them all. And thanks for their faith and support and as promised we will keep the fire a burning.....

READY OR NOT!

by Dwight L. Quinn
Face it, a big change have come to the record business and there is no turning back. Digital downloads are here to stay and so be it. For the record labels this means a big dip in revenues and of course,a new way of distributing their music. The compact disc allowed the labels to make more money and gave them a lot of marketing funds to do the job of getting the buzz out. Something the Digital format won't do in it's early stages, especially for the smaller label guy. The number of downloads that it takes to earn $7.00 is about 12.86 and/or 13 downloads. So if you have a Sales Budget of 65,000 units and/or $ 455,000.00 a year, you would to have a download of 1.9 million to make that same budget in the digital arena today, this by far is a big change. Does this mean, the compact disc is gone for good, absolutely not, it just means that the cd is going to be another side of the revenue stream such as the vinyl, videos, cassette tapes, a small but not totally a depleted product, etc. From 1990 to 2011, worldwide mobile phone subscriptions grew from 12.4 million to over 6 billion, penetrating about 87% of the global population and reaching the bottom of the economic pyramid. In economics, the bottom of the pyramid is the largest, but poorest socio-economic group. In global terms, this is the 4 billion people who live on less than US$2.50 per day.[1] The phrase “bottom of the pyramid” is used in particular by people developing new models of doing business that deliberately target that demographic, often using new technology. This field is also often referred to as the "Base of the Pyramid" or just the "BoP". Well this sector will be able to download music right from their mobile units. And never before has we ever been able to know who exactly is our End Users, until now.    We even know now, with a shadow of a doubt, what song is selling an album. But like with any progress, there are going to be casualties. And in this case, business models that are finding it hard to adapt to this new way users are getting their music and the niche music companies that have non-working artists. So, does a artists still needs a record label? My answer has always been this, does a sports professional need a coach? You can only be a master of one thing, and after almost 42 years I think that I'm still learning, something new, I'm more comfortable today of the music business than at anytime ever,I can see a bright light at the end of the tunnel. We know to increase sales there have to be an increase in productivity. There are more useful tools out here today to increase that productivity and viability. Artists are able to work more today and build fans faster and bigger today and that's the,"Key"to large Sales numbers. People buy things that they know, and if they like it, they become loyal to that thing. The more an Artist work, the more known they become and if the people like them, then they(the people) become loyal fans of the Artists ,then the Artist grows. It's clear to me is that the only thing that significantly changed in the music business is, how people get their music today. But the mechanics that makes it all happens, have not changed and that is, the Entertainment side, the Show business side, the show must go on side, the come on out and take another bow side. And this is what the whole thing  is all about. READY OR NOT!

Keep Your Ears Up

TWO ROSTER ARTISTS
TO WATCH IN 2013

It's already established that 2013 is a big year for World music  by RIAA's account, music Sales has increased by a rather promising percentage. By all accounts the label scene is more vibrant than it has been in years. Steadfast positive attitude and optimism can have a strange feel to it but with our awesome demeanor towards self-appreciation  the news brings sure of relief. But, lately our music deserves it and some. In keeping, here are two Quinn Records TM
roster artists that deserve your attention in 2013.

KL&R2: Kevin is taking on an ambitious undertaking that is bigger than what the group have experimented with in the past.
When KL&R2 first came to the label, they were hard-core hip/hop with many different focal points, but something changed in the making of their fifth single, things took off in  an entirely  different direction and today, with Kevin at  the helm as lead vocalist of KL&R2 the group is converted and re vamped itself into the World of R&B/Soul and when they lay their style down Live on stage they gets your attention. What the group is gearing up for today is touring. Kevin has put together a whole new band made up of funk jazz, soul and blues musicians that has a wealth of on stage experience.
KL&R2 is magic in that they manage to still have that hip/hop feel while venturing way out there in the world of R&B/Soul. But it's working, whatever the formula, the audiences are showing their pleasure with it and the group seems to gain a multitude of fans with every performance.
Don't be surprise what the group might do, they always have something in their show that is fresh and new, it might be their dress wear,a cover song, roses for the ladies, but there's one thing that is for sure, the group takes themselves very seriously. - Jus Brown

James Gilbert: Kansas City' James Gilbert a.k.a Jimmy G, came to the label by way of a Music Submission by the late Big Woody band. The demo was filed away in the our Music Library for nearly two years before it was selected for a new upcoming project that was planned to be release in September,2012. The singer, songwriter and multi-talented musician has already made a name for himself in the industry performing as an opening act and sideman for and with some of the top names in the business like,John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Phil Guy, Little Milton Campbell, Little Johnny Taylor, A.C. Reed, David Dee, Tinsly Ellis, Charley Musselewhite, Little Hatch, Mary Moore, Lavalle White, Chick Willis, Vernon Garrett, Little Joe Blue, Blues Boy Willie, Buster Benton, Millie Jackson, Gary BB Coleman, Zapp, Bobby Bland,Koko Taylor, Johnny Taylor, Johnny Winter, Delbert McClinton, War, Doyle, Bramhall,Screaming Jay Hawkins, Tyrone Davis and Denise LaSalle. James can take his fans from one sphere to another with personal lyrics delivered in mellow baritone vocals reminiscence of Brook Benton,Jerry Butler  and Chuck Jackson to name a few. He transcends to this almost Super-star like Karma  when appear on  stage and we have heard it said many times that James sounds notoriously better Live than he do on his recordings. James will undoubtedly sell a lot records while building an huge dedicated fan base. -  Fred Walker

DISC SPOTLIGHT- the cd

by Dwight L. Quinn
OLIVER JOHNSON &; NITE TRAIN -Oliver Johnson & Nite Train ( QR 061202-1, 2012)
Lu v n' Thing; Lu v n'Thing,Come Back Baby,Hello Time, Do You Love Me Not, Scheming Me,Lied For The First Time, Drink To Much,If You Repay Evil For Good,Take Me Baby, Drink To Much Instrumental.

It was this time last year, that I first en-lighted on a track from this cd and said at the time; this album is so filled with good dance, story-telling lyrics and strong Ballard that any one track could have been pulled off to go under the spotlight. Although it was intimated that a full look may well follow, such a quick return was not fully on the cards until the tally of individual tracks was pulled together and proved to be something of a " Soul mix, with over 50% going in that direction. Consequently, it seemed fitting  to look at a group for the spotlight and where better..?  'Nite Train' may well be Oliver Johnson, whose name is prominent on the album as lead vocalist and band leader, along side Nephew Davis-bassist, Oswald Peters-lead guitar, Mike Bell-drums,Oliver Johnson-trumpet,keyboard and Dwight Quinn-background vocals. The album was produced and arranged by Dwight L. Quinn.

The proceeding start with"Luv n' Thing', rocking , soulful trot that commonly associated with Soul music, heavy bass licks infusing something of the 'Funk' and indeed, once the song gets under way, the use of Nephews thumping bass licks to support the vibrancy of Oliver Johnson's lead voice invokes a hot soul party. Cloaking-in at under four minutes - the longest track on album is 6:14 - it's over all to soon. 'Come Back Baby ' was originally written for Lil Aaron Mosby who passed away before completing his second album  on  the Quinn Records TM label, is up beat urban blues rocker filled with a crazy piano part that reminiscence of the great-late,Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame inductee Johnny Johnson, a style that has been missing in newer blues music. Oliver Johnson did a magnificent job in laying down the piano part that makes 'Come Back Baby ', sensational. Talking dialog intro by Oliver Johnson, trumpet instrumentation, background vocal is joined by percussion to get,' Hello Time', off the starting blocks.
Well placed trumpet solo, the insistent rhythm and the rapport between the lead vocalist and background singers makes this irresistible. Although this is a 2009 set, the next two songs were written by Dwight at the start of the decade, in fact there is something in the blues-ballad,
'Do You Love Me Not', that sounds even earlier - maybe it's the use of the organ. It's a tale of incompatibility in a relationship as the storyteller reflects on the difference in the word...' Some people are made for each other, they stay together- til death do 'em part. See they got love and understanding-they can stop a wind storm before it start. But now me and my baby, our love is like house built up on a rock,-you see everybody scared to move-cause if we do-our house is going drop...'
Mid way of the album Oliver Johnson & Nite Train, and despite its moody sound, under the surface once again the lyrics have their serious side.

Down middle ways of the album, 'Scheming Me', reflects Dwight's time with first relationships that gone bad. Wondering along life way thinking that everything is all well when in fact that it's not. Here again, Oliver lays down what I think is the best trumpet solo part in the whole entire album. You'll probably, like myself while to this track multiple times just to hear this hot trump works. Not quite a complete 'slam-dump' but certainly a few center court free throws, 'Lied For The First Time', is an atmospheric r&b-ballad performed principally as a choral effort and, surprisingly, complemented by a  slow-jam guitar that takes over the song three-quarters through and on to the fade. 'Drink To Much', keeps the tempo up and again Dwight Quinn lyric's have to be commented... 'If You Repay Evil For Good', making the most of Rock music... It's one of those Studio fill jobs, that in this case worked. You can have fun with the track...'Take Me', is a big effort, maybe a little out of place within the whole, as it has a distinctly ' 70' pop flavor and seems undecided whether it should that a" more power to the people pop road. No such problem with the instrumental version soulful,"Drink To Much'.. Once again Oliver Johnson is given full rein to rock his way through the climax and take things out on a higher-playing field.
