JAMES E. GILBERT OUT IN THE OPEN, BLUES N' SOUL MUSIC'S BEST KEPT SECRET!

By Dwight L. Quinn

 The Biography

James Gilbert has been delighting audiences all over the world for nearly four decades. A James Gilbert & Legacy show promises to take you on a journey of an era when music was MUSIC!! James Gilbert is a man with a missionto get you to listen to what you've been missin.

James Gilbert starting his singing career in 1974 performing in his grammar school talent show, James been a singing my whole life. James says that his vocal ability is a family trait, as his Mom & Dad both love to sing. James is a self thought musician, learning lead guitar, bass & drums and to avoid trouble as a teenager. Blues music was a staple in our household in his early years as I studied the mechanics of the Blues, which played out when he was 17, as he was fortunate enough to share the stage with Blues Legend John Lee Hooker. From then on performing has been James Gilbert's way of life.

After bouncing around the country as a member of a Top40 Rock and RnB band in the early 1980's, James decided to return home to expand on his own versatility. So he joined a local musicians union singing radio jingles, of which his first assignment was vocalist for the Missouri Lotteries New Pick-3 campaign in 1992. That same year, his new band got noticed and was selected to perform as actors for the Toyota Corporations Big Spring Sale TV commercial. Although falling in love with the art of voiceovers, performing continued to hold James heart hostage, so he put doing voiceovers on the back burner and continued to pursue his musical career. In nearly four decades of performing, James played with and opened for such superstars as B.B King, KoKo Taylor, Johnny Winter and War.

In 2006 James released his first solo CD project entitled Best Kept Secret, where he had the #1 song for two weeks on Southern Soul radio and received rave reviews in both the US and Europe. In September 2012, James Gilbert was signed to the roster of Quinn Records TM, where his talents as a recording artist as well as company official spokesperson continues to attract attention from all over the world.

WE NOTICED A NEW NAME IN THE DIGITAL SERVICES
BUSINESS
by Dwight L. Quinn

Last month we noticed a new name added to the list of Digital Service companies selling Quinn Records TM music.
Of couse we're not there yet in terms of large revenues coming from the Digital stream, but it's clear to each and everyone of us in the record business that within the next five years,or so and
if not sooner,Digital Downloading when take the lead in being the main choice of accessing and aquiring  music by cusumers.
Digital has added a new dimension to the services record companies provide for artists. Digital accounted for 31 per cent of record companies’ trade revenues in 2011 and the major services expanded their reach from 23 to 58 countries in the
same year. While some services, such as AmazonMP3 or iTunes, effectively replicate the physical format market with consumers buying albums or singles, others, such as Deezer, Spotify and VEVO, rely on either advertising income, people paying a monthly subscription fee or some combination of both.
Such services are still in the early stages of development but offer the opportunity of global scale. Subscription services in June 2012 had an estimated 16 million subscribers globally, a number that has almost doubled in the last 18 months.
Many streaming services are relatively recent start-ups.
One of the largest services, Spotify, only opened in Germany, the world’s third largest music market, in March 2012.
Spotify is most developed in Sweden, where large numbers of consumers use the paid-for subscription tier of the service, we believes it has had a positive effect. “In Sweden, Spotify has changed the music business and made it a happy place to work again.
Now large numbers of people have a premium account, the revenue stream is fantastic. People listen to an album or song and put it on their playlist. They won’t stop listening to it. It’ll be giving the artist and Quinn Records TM and other record company a revenue stream for years.

New Digital Service companies are sprouting up all over the place and streaming, downloading and buying music from a IPad,IPhone and/ or Tablets is sooner than ever is fast becoming the the norm.

We at Quinn Records TM with our new mobil app is still making it easy or fans who are still hold fast to the interest of blues, gospel, jazz and soul music can have continuous access to our music.

Our mobile-app is the cusumers gateway to current information that includes: Quinn's Top-10 Song Chart, music news, current events,Quinn's President Choice, shop n' buy at Quinn store, new releases, coming soon, catalog, tickets, coupons,Facebook, Twitter, photos, artist tour schedule and free music downloads.

A RECORD DEAL MATTERS

by Dwight L. Quinn

Quinn Records TM and other record companies alike, discover, nurture and promote artistic talent. We, the record companies are by far the largest upfront financial investors in artists’ careers. We also bring a huge range of expertise and experience to any campaign to bring a new artist to a broad audience. No other industry player currently offers access to such levels of investment or skills. Behind the breaking of a new artist there are a dynamic combination of creativity, talent, teamwork, strategy, finance and, of course, lots of prayers. Each project requires significant investment in research and development, as well as marketing and promotion. In 2011, record companies were estimated to have invested US$4.5 billion worldwide in artists and repertoire (A&R) combined with marketing. This represented 26 per cent of industry revenues. The four major labels combined had over 5,000 artists on their rosters and tens of thousands more artists are signed to independent labels like ourselves. New talent is the heartbeat of the industry and one in four of these artists (23%) are new signings (signed in the last 12 months). Quinn Record TM and labels alike are able to reinvest the proceeds of successful campaigns in the discovery and nurturing of the next generation of talent. Research study by five independent bodies found 80 per cent of unsigned artists with professional ambitions wanted a recording deal. The top reasons cited as ‘very important’ were marketing and promotional support (71%), TV and radio contacts (58%), the ability to focus on the creative process (50%), tour support (46%) and payment of a financial advance (45%). The findings are supported by countless personal accounts provided by unsigned artists and managers addressing this issue. Without significant investment, industry expertise and creativity (the business) and obviously the artist talent(the music), it is extremely difficult to break an artist or band into popular culture or the mainstream music markets. So where DIY demonstrates the artist ability to approach the industry in the correct manner, there is still no substitute for the experience of the industry to move an artist project forward.” Artists approach labels like Quinn Records TM wanting different types of support. This may be career development, financial support or a team to champion their creations. We want to help, whether it is assisting in the creative process, opening doors for them to work with great producers or supporting them with the right marketing campaign or distribution strategy. At Quinn Records TM we stand on the fact, that a Record deal matters.

THE ARTIST FAMILY TEAM WORKING TOGETHER.

 by Dwight L. Quinn

If there's one thing that I've  notice , here at the Company,   is the strong sense of creative energy that seem to never stop flowing in the Artist family at Quinn Records TM. I'm delighted to have such great talent around me who are  not only looking out for their own career growth and welfare but they also put their skills and talents where ever needed in the Company doing whatever it takes to keep  both areas operating at full steam.  This week alone behind the scene Artist Kevin Wheeler has been working diligently
both in the Studio and in the field recruiting, interviewing and rehearsing new Band members for the kick off of KL&R 2 road shows, with the plan being focused on most shows being self-produced. Kevin has remixed his I Got My Swag On Album, and has expanded the Album to include three (3) new songs. Kevin has brought on Harvey Lee on as his percussionist.  The Artist Family has decided last week to increase the Band size from five to eight musicians, that's going to include two horns, that will give them a total of three horns in the Band.

A.J Dickerson, who's a well known Music Scholar and entertainer in his own rights, in the St. Louis Music World was instrumental in partnering Quinn Records TM with a local venue to bring Live Southern Soul, Blues and Jazz Shows through this new St. Louis venue. Mr. Dickerson, Oliver Johnson and myself, met Monday at the Club with the owner and finalized the arrangement. The first Show according to Oliver Johnson has been scheduled for Thursday September 26th,2013 and there will be regular scheduled Live Shows from that point on. I want to re-introduce St. Louis to the outstanding Southern Soul acts that are out there today, that would be a new exciting  and long awaited experience for the St. Louis Market.

James Gilbert is bringing a new and exciting image to Quinn Records TM with his education and major in Broadcasting,Voice overs for Radio and Television. James has already made a great noticeable impact on the Company not only as a great outstanding artist but  his behind the scene work it's very welcomed. James is now the official Voice  for Quinn Records TM  taking us  into the today's  world of visual and sound technology.

The Artist Family Team working together, communicating, sharing ideas among each other and helping each other in there career goals is something to watch. They most definitely want the customer to know that they will be at all times, giving to them by way of there music, their very best.

IT'S MUSIC BUSINESS TODAY!

by Dwight L. Quinn

As the model for a label has changed, so has the role of the artist in the industry.
Artists today are more powerful than ever, noting that an active Artist can reach
high on Charts today with very little traditional radio or other marketing.
They are business people, marketers... They know how to relate to their audience
and know how to connect properly. Selling "Show Tickets" is the Artist goal. The
income is huge for an Artist who sells from 6,000 to 28,000 tickets per year with a
indie Label.
Quinn Records TM and other  different independent labels have different programs
and signing with John Doe label, for example, is not the same as signing with Willie Earl
records. Artists need to be aware of which indie labels do what best before signing a deal.
An Artist that's into Techno Soul is not going to do well with a Traditional Blues indie Label.

And with today's artists having more options than ever of how to release their music,
The old record contracts are being  tossed aside in favor of a more
egalitarian split -- and with digital platforms becoming ubiquitous, the differences between
major labels and indies will be reduced. Yet the role of the label -- as the vessel, the support
structure and the team assisting the artist in achieving success -- will not be going away.

The power is and always have been with the artist "but the infrastructure and guidance
of a label is still a very important and necessary role in the music industry."

Blues This Morning is a slow, moody soulful cut written by Eugene Smiley an awesome articulate song writer and composer.Smiley laid down a mixed of styles that you can easily pick on as you listen and involve with this song, for instant the piano part is much a Ray Charles signature, a melody that haunts you, and spells out Little Milton Campbell in all expects, the drive and mood puts you back to top of the sixties when Stax Records began to experiment with Soul and Specialty along with Peacock was putting a New spin on the way Blues licks was being laid down no more twelve bar Blues licks, the search was on for new sounding blues,Soul with deeper into the Church house. DISC SPOTLIGHT- the cd

by Dwight L. Quinn
OLIVER JOHNSON &; NITE TRAIN -Oliver Johnson & Nite Train ( QR 061202-1, 2012)
Lu v n' Thing; Lu v n'Thing,Come Back Baby,Hello Time, Do You Love Me Not, Scheming Me,Lied For The First Time, Drink To Much,If You Repay Evil For Good,Take Me Baby, Drink To Much Instrumental.

It was this time last year, that I first en-lighted on a track from this cd and said at the time; this album is so filled with good dance, story-telling lyrics and strong Ballard that any one track could have been pulled off to go under the spotlight. Although it was intimated that a full look may well follow, such a quick return was not fully on the cards until the tally of individual tracks was pulled together and proved to be something of a " Soul mix, with over 50% going in that direction. Consequently, it seemed fitting  to look at a group for the spotlight and where better..?  'Nite Train' may well be Oliver Johnson, whose name is prominent on the album as lead vocalist and band leader, along side Nephew Davis-bassist, Oswald Peters-lead guitar, Mike Bell-drums,Oliver Johnson-trumpet,keyboard and Dwight Quinn-background vocals. The album was produced and arranged by Dwight L. Quinn.

The proceeding start with"Luv n' Thing', rocking , soulful trot that commonly associated with Soul music, heavy bass licks infusing something of the 'Funk' and indeed, once the song gets under way, the use of Nephews thumping bass licks to support the vibrancy of Oliver Johnson's lead voice invokes a hot soul party. Cloaking-in at under four minutes - the longest track on album is 6:14 - it's over all to soon. 'Come Back Baby ' was originally written for Lil Aaron Mosby who passed away before completing his second album  on  the Quinn Records TM label, is up beat urban blues rocker filled with a crazy piano part that reminiscence of the great-late,Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame inductee Johnny Johnson, a style that has been missing in newer blues music. Oliver Johnson did a magnificent job in laying down the piano part that makes 'Come Back Baby ', sensational. Talking dialog intro by Oliver Johnson, trumpet instrumentation, background vocal is joined by percussion to get,' Hello Time', off the starting blocks.
Well placed trumpet solo, the insistent rhythm and the rapport between the lead vocalist and background singers makes this irresistible. Although this is a 2009 set, the next two songs were written by Dwight at the start of the decade, in fact there is something in the blues-ballad,
'Do You Love Me Not', that sounds even earlier - maybe it's the use of the organ. It's a tale of incompatibility in a relationship as the storyteller reflects on the difference in the word...' Some people are made for each other, they stay together- til death do 'em part. See they got love and understanding-they can stop a wind storm before it start. But now me and my baby, our love is like house built up on a rock,-you see everybody scared to move-cause if we do-our house is going drop...'
Mid way of the album Oliver Johnson & Nite Train, and despite its moody sound, under the surface once again the lyrics have their serious side.

Down middle ways of the album, 'Scheming Me', reflects Dwight's time with first relationships that gone bad. Wondering along life way thinking that everything is all well when in fact that it's not. Here again, Oliver lays down what I think is the best trumpet solo part in the whole entire album. You'll probably, like myself while to this track multiple times just to hear this hot trump works. Not quite a complete 'slam-dump' but certainly a few center court free throws, 'Lied For The First Time', is an atmospheric r&b-ballad performed principally as a choral effort and, surprisingly, complemented by a  slow-jam guitar that takes over the song three-quarters through and on to the fade. 'Drink To Much', keeps the tempo up and again Dwight Quinn lyric's have to be commented... 'If You Repay Evil For Good', making the most of Rock music... It's one of those Studio fill jobs, that in this case worked. You can have fun with the track...'Take Me', is a big effort, maybe a little out of place within the whole, as it has a distinctly ' 70' pop flavor and seems undecided whether it should that a" more power to the people pop road. No such problem with the instrumental version soulful,"Drink To Much'.. Once again Oliver Johnson is given full rein to rock his way through the climax and take things out on a higher-playing field.

BIRTHDATES OF SOME FAMOUS TAURUS

by Dwight L. Quinn

As Taurus's have a sense of material values and physical possessions, respect for property and a horror of falling into debt, they will do everything in their power to maintain the security of the status quo and be somewhat hostile to change. Mentally, they are keen-witted and practical more often than intellectual, but apt to become fixed in their opinions through their preference for following accepted and reliable patterns of experience. Their character is generally dependable, steadfast, prudent, just, firm
and unshaken in the face of difficulties. Their vices arise from their virtues, going to extremes on occasion, such as sometimes being too slavish to the conventions they admire.

SPRING SUMMER AND THAN COME'S FALL!

by Dwight L. Quinn
This Summer you'll be hearing a lots more R&B coming out of our doors in these Summer Releases due out June,2013. Kevin of KL&R2 in particular are working on an aggressive Soul project that will almost surely put him and KL&R 2 in a demanding position.
And,James Gilbert our hot,new Recording Artist that hails from Kansas City, Missouri has already shown us what he can do. James has brought a whole new dimension and broadness to our sound and the fans are letting us know that by keeping James at the very Top of our Song Chart each week. James is expected to be releasing his second Album on the Quinn Records Label this Summer. With new and original cuts, and you guest it, it will have all of that KC "Rock" in each of the Songs along with those powerful vocal cords spurting out  soulful tunes.Oliver Johnson, the guy that brought the trumpet to soul, said that he has a bunch of new songs that he put together between gigs. Oliver will be offering a bit of both,Jazz and Soul in this package this Summer. I can't promise you how the weather is going to be out of doors but I can surely promise you that inside of Quinn Records TM, it's going to be HOT! And than comes Fall, this is the time when we usually Releases our last project for the year,i.e. October, but there's something usual about this coming October 27th, 2013 but from my perspective, it doesn't seen like it's been that long, but time doesn't lie either. This October 27th, 2013 will be marking our 42nd year in the Blues Business,"My-My Ain't It Funny How Time,Just Slips On Away?.-GO SLOW-Blues Crossing!

SUBMITTING YOUR MUSIC TO QUINN RECORDS TM

by Dwight Quinn, April 26th, 2013
Today the phone calls are a bit different than they were a few minutes back, when a promising artists would call us and ask, if we accepted unsolicited demos, and in our case the answer would always be "yes and then we would proceed on to give the caller instructions as to  how to send us the demo.
But, today the call come in asking us, do we accept unsolicited demos, and our answer is still, yes, but the different in this call is that the promising artist is now asking us can they email us a mp3 or several mp3's of their song or they would ask us to go to their website to both look and listen to their music. That process is good in one way but harmful in the other. Here's what I mean, Quinn Records TM take music very seriously, and we are always releasing new projects and in most cases with new upcoming artists. But in order to do that on a continuous bases, like year end and year out, we must have an inventory of available music. We get that available music from demos being sent in to us and we process those demos into our inventory and add the demo to our Library. Now only the demos the match our style of music gets to go into that inventory. So when each release quarter  rolls around we don't have to run around looking for new music, we already have it,and ready to go. Call it old school, but we call it resourcefulness. It's clear that technology is great for getting thing their fast, and being accessible, but that human thing that makes us different is utilizing time, each Thursday for many, many minutes we have set aside four hours( 10:00 am til 2:00 p.m) dedicated to listening to the demos that came in that week and when we hear one that meets our standards than we grab it up,process into our Library and contact the Artist with our decision, we don't mess around. We are serious, and we know that the next big act is out there somewhere and we want it. Now the guy that calls in and wants us to stop and go to there website or send us an mp3 along with the 6000 emails that we get everyday, we can't process them in that way. Email gets deleted, computers crashes and gets attacked by viruses, that's not good for neither one of us. Our physical Library don't have those kind of crises or threats, so the artists Demo is always available to us to be used in a Quinn's project.  Our newest Artist to the Quinn Records TM family of Recording Artists, James Gilbert, It's A Real Good Sign, was selected from our Library of Demos and he's doing well, but if it wasn't for our Library of Demos,he would have been over looked. So we have a Demo Policy that is good for both parties, a Demo is a File and that's the way we treat it. And that's the place where we go to four times a year when it's time to get ready for us to release a new project. So I hope that this shaded a little light on submitting your music to Quinn Records TM. Keep your Demos coming in.
