JAZZ ON WASHINGTON AVENUE - OLIVER JOHNSON TRIO

by Dwight L. Quinn                                                                                           3/14/2014

Nothing but raw talent, is the best way to describe trumpeter/singer/songwriter and recording artist Oliver Johnson who at young age of nine first began playing the trumpet backed by the inspiration and motivation of his mother, the late Roberta Johnson whom made it her life goal to coach and guide young Oliver into the master musician that he has become. Growing up in East St. Louis,Illinois Oliver
got to experience the mentorship of the industry's big-named Artists like,Tabb Smith,Leo Chears,Miles Davis, Albert King, who helped Oliver further developed his musical skills. Oliver put his best foot forward when the Label gave him the green light in producing, the album,"Jazz On Washington Avenue",Oliver had opportunity to select songs that formed the mixture of straight ahead jazz with modern and contemporary all together on this must-listen to album. Original songs like,"Brazil,""Quiet Street",and"In The Moment" topped off the mood that Oliver was trying to capture in,"Jazz On Washington Avenue".
Time sort of stood still as the sound of,"Eternal Triangle" and "Mr. Kenyata" bellowed out that hip,
down beat, mellow sound that you use to hear backin the day vibrating out from those cool romantic Jazz
Clubs was frequent venue of choice for Jazz lovers and jazz entertainment.
Accompanying Oliver Johnson on "Jazz On Washington Avenue,"Henry Burns, piano and keyboards, the late "Raymond Eldridges Jr."bass,"Wallace Alvin Troop,"drums, Henry Taylor,"guitar and Oliver Johnson,"horns.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT QUINN RECORDS TM'S RECORD PROMOTIONS

by Dwight L. Quinn
10-21-2013

Our Promotion Department, headed by Ronald Rayford a.k.a Ron Ray is busier than a  bear with a sweet tooth, being chased by a swam of mad honey bees, he's on the move. The Promotion Department is key to our business. Because when Ron is successful in securing airplay for our records, than our Marketing Plan comes alive.

The Promotion Department is working several releases for the label today, that is doing rather well. They are targeted to Radio,s  Blues n' Soul Music Shows both domestic and international those projects are, GO SLOW-Blues Crossing, " The Soul of A Man by KL&R2," " Keep On Keeping, by James Gilbert. We have a great sound being released into the Blues n' Soul Marketplace this fall/winter period and we're all excited and elated about the already  positive feedback the we are getting from industry movers and shakers.
The songs that are getting most of the industry M&S's buzz  are James Gilberts,"Blues This Morning," Osee Anderson's,"Breaking Up Somebodys Home," KL&R2's,"I Got My Swag On" and Mississippi Red's,"Send Me Some To Love". Quinn is already entering into two non-exclusive Master License Deals with two international Music companies for the territories of India and Spain.

Competition is heavy, record labels, big and small, are releasing several hundred CDs each and every week. And the Radio stations are over-whammed with these records. So when Ron get one of  our songs added to the Radio stations playlists this is an outstanding victory.
A “playlist” is a list of songs a station plays and the playlist is created every week or so  by the station’s Music Director. Ron gets real passionate with his sales pitch to MD's, Pd's and Djs when he's communicating a Quinn Records TM recording it gets us a chance to be heard by the radio station’s Music and Program Directors.

Just like sales people our Ron don't let any grass grow under his feet. Ron is always pitching a Quinn Records TM recording may it be a blues, a gospel, a jazz or a soul project it doen't matters. If you’ve ever had any experience selling anything, then you know how important enthusiasm and a positive attitude are in convincing potential customers to buy your product. Our Promo Rep is just that way he stays  in a positive, upbeat and motivated frame of mind. He know that, this is an important element in the music business. And,
Ron knows also, that we’re not the only label releasing new music every week, and that radio stations can only play a few of these new songs at a time so,it's not personal, it's just business as usual .

Promotion at Quinn Records TM goe's a bit further than  describing the work done by Ron to get radio airplay for our releases.
The Promo Rep” is the companies breathing apparatus, pitch man,the spokes person who present the label’s new releases to radio stations with the intent to build a relationship that would allow us to place products that would both provide entertainment to the exsisting listeners as well as attract new listeners by playing the songs the we selects for promotion.
Quinn Records TM rely on it's Promo Rep. to  decide very carefully what specific songs from an artist's new record would most likely fit the radio station’s format and attract the listener’s attention.

Keeping the human-element alive, well and active in our Record Promotion  Progam is still the number one strategy  used  in our Record Promotional planning. It's nothing more powerful and enjoyable than visiting the Stations face-to-face and learning just what the Market is really like from a birds-eye view. We do every thing possible to make sure face-to face contact with the Radio Station stays our utmost priority.

To add even more  convenience for the commercial customer in our Record Promotion Program, we created an online page at our website, that's dedicated to the Radio MD's.PD,s, DJ's, Press and Retail  commercial customer where they can go 24/7 and request any Promo Copy that they want and Ron will send it out to them asap. All they do is go to our website, login set up an account, than go to the  Radio,Press,Retail link and order. The CD is free and we ship it free.

The Promotion Department is the arm of the company that makes sure that our records are at the Radio Stations that we service, and are available for airplay.

BLUES THIS MORNING ( THE MOODY BLUES SONG)

by Dwight L. Quinn
10/10/2013

"Blues This Morning" is a 2009 song by the Kansas City rocker singer/songwriter/musician
 James Gilbert.
It was written by K-City Records owner and Producer Eugene Smiley,Sr.,and was first
released on Big Woody's, Going Home cd and recently released on the Quinn Records TM's
2012 popular 2-CD Box Set album Go Slow Blues Crossing. The album is a concept album
chronicling the typical style, side and sound of Blues "Blues This Morning" featured on the third track, which is titled "Blues This Morning."
It is one of two songs written by Eugene Smiley,Sr. on Go Slow-Blues Crossing, with the other being "A Real Good Sign." The song (by Special Guest Carl Marshall, titled" I Got The Blues Trying To Find Love") get a group of musician together taking turns in telling about their personal experience of how they got blues while trying to find love on a pleasant, sunny morning, while the chorus and bridge suggest wistful nostalgia from the inquisitive Carl Marshall the narrator:

"My baby left me this morning, And I just couldn’t understand
Ask her why she’s leaving, She said she’s found another man"

"Blues This Morning" was one of James Gilbert's first compositions for the Moody Blues.
It was also the second Moody Blues recording to feature him on lead vocals, the first song
being the cover of "Rainy Night In Georgia", from Keep On Keeping On. The album would
later go on to include some highly successful songs for the Moody Blues, such as "Oh Baby
You Don't Have To Go" (LiL Aaron Mosby), "Send Me Someone To Love" (Mississippi Red),
and "Last Night" (LiL Aaron Mosby).

QUINN RECORDS TM RELEASES NEW ALBUM ON NOVEMBER 5 THE BEST OF OLIVER JOHNSON

by Dwight L. Quinn
09/29/2013

Two time Sodexho Award-winning blues/soul/jazz trumpeter Oliver Johnson is  one of the most proliferated trumpet greats of all time....Oliver, known as the guy who brought the trumpet to Soul." On November 5, 2013 Quinn Records TM will release The Best of Oliver Johnson, a rocking collection of Oliver's top tunes  celebrating Oliver's six years as an international blues/soul/jazz recording artist and a professional musical experience that started  at age seven. Recorded in Centreville, Illinois and produced by Quinn Records TM producer/ songwriter/ label owner,Dwight L. Quinn the album is a mix of blues and soul sounds that allowed Oliver to stretch his thundering-trumpet solo's to all time highs.

Oliver wrote,You Make Me Sing The Blues track, Quinn wrote five additional tracks and the album was topped with four covers. The songs were collected from Oliver's best-sellers. The Best of Oliver Johnson will bring Oliver's discography to nine albums, since signing with Quinn Records TM in 2004.

Making up the core of Oliver's Nite Train band on the CD are Benton (drums), Henry Taylor
(guitar), Oliver (keyboards), Nephew Davis (bass), Oliver (Trumpet). Oswald Peters and Julio each add guitar to three tracks. Oliver, who vocal duties are to wam-bam the audience, was inspired by the sessions to monorate in the songs, something that ole band musician use to do, talk to the audience and/or the band members while the song is in play, singing If You Repay Evil For Good,Oliver would break out and direct his Nite Train Band and shout out to whoever is listening that it's hot up in here, making The Best of Oliver Johnson the most personal, free-jamming and just plain fun recording of  his nearly four-decade career.

According to Oliver, "I have a personal attachment to the music in this album. Mr. Harry Turner my music teacher while in high school would always reminded me that music is about feeling -- And I don't ever forget that".
My hope is that everyone who listens to,The Best of Oliver Johnson feels it. I know that I sure did!" Oliver  is signed with the prestigious LA De Da Entertainment and Events in St. Louis and he will be touring nationally in support of the album.

Oliver's history is proof that dreams do come true. Oliver at age six, began his study as a vocalist with his mother,Roberta Johnson of Uttica Mississippi. Roberta, who was a gospel church singer, also introduced Oliver to the music of performers like Louis Armstrong and Nancy Wilson. When Oliver was eight years old, a famous jazz organist Tabb Smith and his groups use to rehearse in Oliver's home. At ten years old, Oliver started the study of the trumpet with Mr. Harry Turner of the Count Basie Band.

Oliver's first professional performances at thirteen, started at the Cosmo Hall in East St. Louis that featured regular acts like Ike Turner, Johnny Johnson, Chuck Berry, Little Milton and Albert King.
After high school Oliver started touring with Waestmoreland, Inc. The Band that eventually became Albert King's Band included Motown-Recording regulars like, Tyrone Perry and Paul Jackson. For twelve years (12) Oliver toured throughout UK and Japan playing trumpet and singing with Mel and Tim (Backfield In Motion), Joe Tex (Skinny Leg's and All), Shirley Brown (Woman to Woman), Albert King (Born Under A Bad Sign), Gladys Knight & The Pips, Rufus Thomas (Walking The Dog), and Carla Thomas (B-A-B-Y Baby).

Aside from Oliver's regular performances he has recently played the Black Rep's Production "One More Time". Oliver is mostly known for his versatility in many different music formats, from Be-bop trumpet to Falsetto R&B singing.

He first recorded under his own name with his Cheese and Butter album a self-produced, project with the help of Roberta his mother. Hard Times! was his second project, Hard Times was later picked up and re-issued on Quinn Records TM label.
He made his first solo albums two in the late 1990's, with bands featuring outstanding musicians, including famed guitarist Oswald Peters. With his be-bop sound and rockin blues band (later featuring side man Henry Taylor), it wasn't long before he was adopted by the southern soul audience as one of their own. .

Oliver signed with Quinn Records TM in 2004, releasing Hard Times: On The Other Side of Midnight!
(which earned him his two Sodexho Lifetime Achievement Awards). In 2007 he joined the late Earl Wilson Jr. Gateway Classics annual events!. He won a Sedexho Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 for his dedication to the arts.
During the mid-2000s Oliver has continued recording and touring relentlessly, playing clubs, concert halls and festivals all over, electrifying audiences wherever he performs. Oliver's 2012 Argosy Casino Show featuring the legendary Richard Brooks original founding member of infamous,Impressions was hailed as an over-whelming success.
Oliver and his Nite Train Band continues to tour and work nitely in clues and venues all around the St. Louis City and Metropolitan area and shortly Oliver  will be touring  internationally with his own band.

The Best of Oliver Johnson proves Oliver Johnson's be-bop rocking trumpeting  is a true force of nature, while his songs and lyrics are a living history of the blues n soul earning him the reprutation as the guy who bought the trumpet to soul.
His thundering trumpet like Gabriel's is blowing the walls of blues and soul away. His improvisations on the blues and soul are full of fun and good humor. The blues and soul don't get much better."

TERRESTRIAL RADIO'S CRITICS WOULD HAVE YOU THINKING TERRESTRIAL RADIO IS "DEAD".

9/20/2013

Let’s Look Well Into The Matter

Satellite radio, as an example, gained 453,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2013, bringing its total to 24.4 million. In the same first quarter of 2013, Pandora has around 70 million active users, Pandora One gained more than 700,000 new subscribers, which brings their total subscribers to 2.5 million. Spotify has over 24 million active users, currently and over 6 million paying subscribers.

Terrestrial radio’s absolute biggest competitor, is iTunes accounting for about 75% of global digital music with over 600 million users worldwide. iTunes has just recently revealed their own iTunes Radio which will compete with the streaming services.

These numbers reflect global users rather than only in the United States, so the numbers cannot be taken as face value right now. But these are the numbers that critics quote, and even still, some of these numbers can hardly touch the impact of terrestrial radio in the U.S. today.

Why Digital Radio Is Gaining Strength.

The question is, how has digital radio gained such speed and momentum, enough to begin to compete with terrestrial radio? For starters, the instantaneous selection of music from one’s library is something that terrestrial radio simply cannot do. Waiting for your favorite song? You don’t have to wait for it to come on the radio—just browse, select and push play.

Another advantage to digital radio is the breadth of one’s music library. Terrestrial radio has its certain playlist of songs decided by the DJ at that time. But with digital and streaming radio, you are the DJ. You have the entire selection of your uploaded or streaming music library at your fingertips, ready to be called up at will.

Still another advantage is mobility. In the advent of mobile phones and tablets, carrying around your music library has never been easier. There are thinner and sleeker Walkmans these days, but carrying around a device just for radio in addition to your mobile phone or tablet just doesn’t sit well with the majority of consumers.

Despite All Of The Hype, Terrestrial Radio Still Has Its Own Unique Benefits.

While digital radio is gaining momentum due to these benefits, terrestrial radio still has a hold on the American public for reasons of its own. For starters, some people prefer to not have to choose the music they listen to, and they like a DJ playing the top hits or genre-specific hits of that station for them.
This also helps with song and artist discovery, just in a different way than some of the streaming services.

Terrestrial radio lives and breathes local content. As wavelengths and signals can only travel so far, radio stations are generally encouraged to maintain some sense of locality in their programming and possibly even sound choice. This includes local news, music from local artists and even advertisements for local businesses that you just can’t get from digital radio.

In terms of artist royalties, radio stations, for the most part, have got a system, and it’s a system that has worked for many years. Streaming and digital radio services are still trying to work out the kinks in their own plans for rewarding artists for their music, and many people—especially artists—are turned off by this fact.

And finally, terrestrial radio is free. Several of these digital and streaming providers do end up having free music as well, but terrestrial radio will always be free. No subscriptions necessary. If these providers ever decide to go subscription only, terrestrial radio will always be free. While digital radio does pose something of a threat to terrestrial radio, the traditional medium is just too far engrained to be going anywhere anytime soon. There may be some adaptation involved as the music industry continues to evolve over time, but for the most part, terrestrial radio has found and will continue to hold a special place in the hearts of music listeners.

AND THE BAND PLAYED ON

AND THE BAND PLAYED ON
by Dwight L. Quinn

An industry that transformed itself...

Do you know of, or can recall of any industry that has reinvented itself  like the music business has during   the past decade and a half?

Fifteen years ago the CD was the main format
for listening to music and the digital marketplace
was just beginning. Now here we are today and there are more than 400+ authorized digital music services worldwide offering more than 14 million songs.

Digital sales already comprise nearly half of total revenues for the music business in the United States.
To make a long story short, it’s no longer  about CDs,it’s about access to music anytime, anywhere and the experience, convenience and the accessibility that keeps fans coming back for more, more and more.
And of course their are going to be different business models that  will  continue to evolve, but around
one fundamental objective: it will all be about the music.

More than any other art or entertainment form, music transports, transforms and reconnects us.
But behind the emotional attachment and beyond the artist on the album cover is an army of people who make the music play – planning, developing and investing in your next favorite song.

Providing the songs that make up the soundtrack to your life takes significant work and investment, and
the modern label is committed to giving fans more musical options than ever. Which is just another
reason why the music industry is the best industry in the world.

A RECORD DEAL MATTERS

by Dwight L. Quinn

Quinn Records TM and other record companies alike, discover, nurture and promote artistic talent. We, the record companies are by far the largest upfront financial investors in artists’ careers. We also bring a huge range of expertise and experience to any campaign to bring a new artist to a broad audience. No other industry player currently offers access to such levels of investment or skills. Behind the breaking of a new artist there are a dynamic combination of creativity, talent, teamwork, strategy, finance and, of course, lots of prayers. Each project requires significant investment in research and development, as well as marketing and promotion. In 2011, record companies were estimated to have invested US$4.5 billion worldwide in artists and repertoire (A&R) combined with marketing. This represented 26 per cent of industry revenues. The four major labels combined had over 5,000 artists on their rosters and tens of thousands more artists are signed to independent labels like ourselves. New talent is the heartbeat of the industry and one in four of these artists (23%) are new signings (signed in the last 12 months). Quinn Record TM and labels alike are able to reinvest the proceeds of successful campaigns in the discovery and nurturing of the next generation of talent. Research study by five independent bodies found 80 per cent of unsigned artists with professional ambitions wanted a recording deal. The top reasons cited as ‘very important’ were marketing and promotional support (71%), TV and radio contacts (58%), the ability to focus on the creative process (50%), tour support (46%) and payment of a financial advance (45%). The findings are supported by countless personal accounts provided by unsigned artists and managers addressing this issue. Without significant investment, industry expertise and creativity (the business) and obviously the artist talent(the music), it is extremely difficult to break an artist or band into popular culture or the mainstream music markets. So where DIY demonstrates the artist ability to approach the industry in the correct manner, there is still no substitute for the experience of the industry to move an artist project forward.” Artists approach labels like Quinn Records TM wanting different types of support. This may be career development, financial support or a team to champion their creations. We want to help, whether it is assisting in the creative process, opening doors for them to work with great producers or supporting them with the right marketing campaign or distribution strategy. At Quinn Records TM we stand on the fact, that a Record deal matters.

Kevin has long been wanting to do a what he calls a real soul sound. Signed on to the Label in 2004. Kevin has enjoyed experimenting with various musical experiences that has took him from Spiritual to Smooth Jazz and from Hip/hop to Soul. All because of the freedom afforded to
him by the Label. When Kevin, talked about adding to reportorial, some Soul, was at the very heart of his original attention when signing to the Label Kevin called on help of Quinn Records TM label founder Dwight Quinn to match him up with right song that best defined the musical character, of this Virginia Jammer and to get himself  noticed  in the Southern Soul  Market. Quinn, found what he thought was the right cut, in the Little Delta Music catalog ,the Publishing arm of Malaco Records,(the Southern Soul Label),and pulled out "Lets Go Party" written by Bobby Conerly and Charles Ray Burton. "Lets Go Party" had that feel and bounce that makes for a great party grooving dance song. After hearing the demo the first time Kevin was hooked and immediately got the feel and here we are, Kevin promised that things are going to get better as him and R2 start their tour.
"Lets Go Party" will be a must-listen to blast coming from over the Airways, through the internet and right out to rocking, back in woods,street-side Clubs around the Country."Lets Go Party"!

MY FAVORITE JUNK FOOD WAS A BOX OF CRACKER JACKS

by Dwight Quinn

I bet you didn't know that when ever you purchase a Quinn Records TM product, we always give the customer something Free, it just comes natural with the Company. The idea came about when I was a boy growing up in East St. Louis. My favorite junk food was a box of Cracker Jacks. What I became to love and appreciate about a box of Cracker jacks, is that it wasn't the fact that it was  a great tasting, lip-smacking snack with its sweet caramel covered popcorn flavor and roasted salted peanuts that blended well with popcorn, it was as I began to realize that with every box of Cracker jacks that you purchased there were always a prize in the box. It was Free, a plastic ring or a spinning top you  name it, it was the prize that excited us. And it soon became apparent that it was the FREE prizes that was drawing us kids to the Cracker Jacks, the prizes was creating the buzz and making for a grand conversation piece, a friend maker and so on. Well I took that Cracker Jacks mentality into the business with me and applied the same strategy here at Quinn Records TM. We appreciate the customer so much that it is always proper for us to give the customer something back. To show our deepest appreciation and thanks for their business.
Quinn Records TM, from July 24th, 2013 until August 24th, 2013  is offering 25% Off List Price Program on all of our Gospel Albums, our customers will not find this offer nowhere else but at Quinn Records TM Online Store. And, if you purchase two or more CD's, we'll give you a FREE Quinn Records TM Signature T-Shirt, a $16.98 value or maybe another CD to go along with the purchase, that's just what we do. After almost forty-two years in business we still get overly excited when customer buy from us. It's the "Cracker Jacks" in us.

And, please do take our "FREE SHIPPING" program seriously when a purchase of $99.99 is ringed up on our P O S Register. We will Ship your order anywhere in the greater U.S.A. FREE.  YEP! Blues This Morning is bumping head on  with the likes of the sound of the early 60's,i.e. Little Milton Campbell, B.B. King, Bobby Blues Boy Bland, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, and the style-like-list goes on and on, James Gilbert's nailed this song he put his Soul in, Blues This Morning. THE ARTIST FAMILY TEAM WORKING TOGETHER.

 by Dwight L. Quinn

If there's one thing that I've  notice , here at the Company,   is the strong sense of creative energy that seem to never stop flowing in the Artist family at Quinn Records TM. I'm delighted to have such great talent around me who are  not only looking out for their own career growth and welfare but they also put their skills and talents where ever needed in the Company doing whatever it takes to keep  both areas operating at full steam.  This week alone behind the scene Artist Kevin Wheeler has been working diligently
both in the Studio and in the field recruiting, interviewing and rehearsing new Band members for the kick off of KL&R 2 road shows, with the plan being focused on most shows being self-produced. Kevin has remixed his I Got My Swag On Album, and has expanded the Album to include three (3) new songs. Kevin has brought on Harvey Lee on as his percussionist.  The Artist Family has decided last week to increase the Band size from five to eight musicians, that's going to include two horns, that will give them a total of three horns in the Band.

A.J Dickerson, who's a well known Music Scholar and entertainer in his own rights, in the St. Louis Music World was instrumental in partnering Quinn Records TM with a local venue to bring Live Southern Soul, Blues and Jazz Shows through this new St. Louis venue. Mr. Dickerson, Oliver Johnson and myself, met Monday at the Club with the owner and finalized the arrangement. The first Show according to Oliver Johnson has been scheduled for Thursday September 26th,2013 and there will be regular scheduled Live Shows from that point on. I want to re-introduce St. Louis to the outstanding Southern Soul acts that are out there today, that would be a new exciting  and long awaited experience for the St. Louis Market.

James Gilbert is bringing a new and exciting image to Quinn Records TM with his education and major in Broadcasting,Voice overs for Radio and Television. James has already made a great noticeable impact on the Company not only as a great outstanding artist but  his behind the scene work it's very welcomed. James is now the official Voice  for Quinn Records TM  taking us  into the today's  world of visual and sound technology.

The Artist Family Team working together, communicating, sharing ideas among each other and helping each other in there career goals is something to watch. They most definitely want the customer to know that they will be at all times, giving to them by way of there music, their very best.
