HOW I POSITIONED OUR BRAND

by Dwight L. Quinn

I remember when I opened the label several years ago.
As a team we were working on how we wanted to position the label, looking for the
emotional benefit that we could offer to our customers. We finally landed on "We'll give you what you want" as our positioning. We never used it as a tagline, but more as a positioning statement for how we would serve up what we offered customers.

Many of our customers were mid-size independent retail record stores, operating in small and large urban cities. The idea of helping them to get the kind of music that they wanted was engaging.
Our work would get them track able sales results and they would recognized that. The fact that
we were and still are today a brand promotion label gave our positioning statement double meaning.
Once it caught on, our brand's positioning became the basis for building the brand experience
across our entire marketing plan. We realized that the key was to make sure that our actual brand experience delivers on what was intended in the positioning.

In the label at the time, we made sure we helped our customers showcase and display our products to get the recognition they needed in order to generate a sale. We make a big deal when one of our customers sale our products by celebrating every successful sale. It became part of our personality and part of the experience of working with us. This came directly out of our positioning statement:"We'll give you what you want."

Take a look at our brand and what we've done for positioning. Notice,
our tagline is  a big hint:

Quinn Records TM: "Where the sound of blues, gospel, jazz and soul music is made."

Notice the level of emotion in each of our tagline, which essentially highlights our brand's
positioning.

Here's how we translate the tagline into our positioning statements:

Quinn Records TM: Makes you feel like you'll get what you asked for.

We digs deep into the emotional benefit that we offer to our customers. We're always thinking
about how we want our customer to feel about us, every time they think about us. We tried to
capture that in a brief statement that best describes what we can offer, and keep a list of  options on hand. And throw them out to the team and do a little brainstorming.
It's makes for a lot of fun, especially when those creative juices start flowing and ideas comes from seemly out of nowhere.

IT'S MUSIC BUSINESS TODAY!

by Dwight L. Quinn

As the model for a label has changed, so has the role of the artist in the industry.
Artists today are more powerful than ever, noting that an active Artist can reach
high on Charts today with very little traditional radio or other marketing.
They are business people, marketers... They know how to relate to their audience
and know how to connect properly. Selling "Show Tickets" is the Artist goal. The
income is huge for an Artist who sells from 6,000 to 28,000 tickets per year with a
indie Label.
Quinn Records TM and other  different independent labels have different programs
and signing with John Doe label, for example, is not the same as signing with Willie Earl
records. Artists need to be aware of which indie labels do what best before signing a deal.
An Artist that's into Techno Soul is not going to do well with a Traditional Blues indie Label.

And with today's artists having more options than ever of how to release their music,
The old record contracts are being  tossed aside in favor of a more
egalitarian split -- and with digital platforms becoming ubiquitous, the differences between
major labels and indies will be reduced. Yet the role of the label -- as the vessel, the support
structure and the team assisting the artist in achieving success -- will not be going away.

The power is and always have been with the artist "but the infrastructure and guidance
of a label is still a very important and necessary role in the music industry."

When You Strip A Way The Glamour.

by Dwight L. Quinn

You know the old wisdom "All that shine is not gold, and " Looks are Deceiving and so on. Well there's a whole lot of truth to those aged old pieces of wisdom. And I discovered it in my early days in the Music business, I came into the Business like most, totally with no reality at all, I told my reality to wait outside for me until I get back, I got this! Than all of a sudden I noticed that I went from eating choice cut fresh meat to can meat, potted meat, spam. I'm asking myself now what going wrong here, this is not the way it suppose to be, I'm in the record business. I' ll go to my office, put up the phone to make a call , no dial tone, so I leave but when I get the parking lot, guess what, my car is gone,so I calls the police so that I can make out a police report for a stolen car, well don't you have any idea who may have stolen your car the policeman would ask, and I would say yeah!,police would ask, than who and tell'em the Bank stole it. Man those days was rough when you leave reality waiting outside.
I'm glad of one if nothing, else, my father always taught me and brothers to honest with your self first and you'll find it easy to honest with others. I realized that I was going to succeed at this business unless I go back and get my reality back and than go forth.

Now I see my business as a business, a living entity that needs focused attention, that need to know not only who its customers are,but what they want, in terms of products and service. We don't second guest.
Don't be fooled Music is Entertaining but it takes Business management with planning to get it to and from the stag to the Bank.

I average 20 working hours a day, trying to get Quinn Records TM right,  right doesn't mean that we're doing something that is wrong, right in our strategy that means, simply staying on course with our idea and plan. We're not in the Hit making business, we don't trade on Wall Street,we're in the Listening business specializing in Artist Development and  make music for, as they use to call it,"turn-table" use and  for customer who only like new music in their favorite genre and wants it right now.

We're diverse, we build on diversification it gives us a broader base product line and allows us to keep niche music that identifies with an eager to served  Market making available the music that they are most familiar with thus rekindling again a useful and valuable product in today's  market.

Happy Fathers Day To The Fathers Who Helped Made Us, Quinn Records TM

NEWS UPDATE:

FATHERS DAY WEEKEND - Happy Fathers Day To The Fathers Who Helped Made Us, Quinn Records TM
From: Dwight Quinn,Founder/Quinn Records TM
I often think about the guys who came along during my earlier years in the business, who had the faith in my idea, enough so, to lend me their talent, knowledge and prudence that I still uses today. Starting with late Lil Aaron Mosby, through him I picked upon the humbleness that he presented also his deep undivided care and concerns that he had for other people. Those who knew Lil Aaron, while he was a live couldn't help from recognizing and picking upon , how polite and manner-able this man was, it just came natural for Lil Aaron to be polite. Lil Aaron never thought that he was a great Blues singer, he would always tell me Quinn,I don't get up there and sing, but instead I get up there and I talk to my audience. I learnt something new. The Late great Gospel singer,Reverend Anderson Sparks,a great motivator he believe in what we were trying to accomplish in the early days of our existence  and Rev. Sparks  jumped right into the business side of the company and things just flourish. Rev. Anderson Sparks is the person that was responsible for single-handily building the Gospel side of Quinn Records TM.  Until this day, I would had never have thought that a great Gospel singer as the late Rev.Anderson Sparks knew so much about the Record business as he did, he  taught me a lot about, the what and the way we do business today. Rev. Sparks understood the pros and cons of  marketing, promoting and the importance of artists in this business, keeping themselves highly visible, with the purpose of building huge fan bases the key necessity needed in order to build a stable career in the Entertainment business. And all the way up until his death, Rev. Sparks would always make it a practice to hand carry our promo records to Radio Stations all across the country between, pastoring his Church, recording and performing live shows. Because of that " don't ease up-until the job is done"mentality of Rev. Anderson Sparks we have little patient for sleepers. Other great Fathers like the late Terry"Dewey" Williams,"Jimmy Jones and my mentor and former coffee buddy the late Leroy Crisp, I credit these men with all the wisdom, faith helping hands that they reached out to me and Quinn Records TM and made us what we are today. We're not a big Company in size, we're  just a Company that do big things. And I say,Happy Fathers Day to them all. And thanks for their faith and support and as promised we will keep the fire a burning.....

2013 Summer Release Season

by Dwight L. Quinn

We're well into our 2013 Summer release season. And the Season looks  very good  for CD Sales, because of their unexpected increase  during this tuf economy. Of course that's music to our ear. Since  the past five years or so, we've released our projects in both formats digital and CD. We know that Digital and streaming is a great way for  fans to get their music fast and convenient, but the CD is still the format of choice by fans and industry professionals. In fact this is not a new phenomenon in the music industry. The music industry has always offered music in two formats simultaneously.
This Summer we are going to release three new projects and they're all going to be available in both formats digital and CD,also our customers still will be able to buy the releases in our Special order formats, vinyl, cassette tape and sheet music. This year projects will have a difference that is going to be easily recognized by our regular customers and that is we're going to be offering several covers that will be playing a big part in this years releases and I'm rather excited about this plan because it is not usually our preference to use cover songs in a new projects, since we offer and promote to our customers, new music. Smooth Jazz is one the categories that we will be providing a new product. Kevin has finished four new cuts for this category and I know our Smooth Jazz fans are going to truly love what we got to offer them in the Smooth Jazz area. The other categories that we will  offer this Summer is of course, our signature category,"Blues" with the release of our hot,fast-moving CD Compilation,"GO SLOW-Blues Crossing",the album already has produced a lead off, run away hit song, it's James Gilbert's"Blues In The Morning" the song has been Blues Radio's top selection for the past nine weeks.Other popular songs on the Album is,"Mississippi Red's,Send Me Someone To Love,"Osee Anderson, Breaking Up Somebody's Home," Lil Aaron Mosby,Last Night" and Oliver Johnson,Want You Dance With Me". To further promote the GO SLOW-Blues Crossing Album we're booking a five city tour scheduled to start in July, 2013 promoting the the targeted Cities are,St.Louis,MO.,Chicago,IL.,Houston,TX.,Lansing,MI. and Memphis,TN. We're on a mission to galvanize our Artists fan base by bringing them a hot show that will be packed with new moving and entertaining sounds.

And if you would want the Show to stop in your City email; dwight@quinnrecords.net.

Lastly, we are expecting to cover a release in our Jazz category with a Single that's been on the drawing board for nearly three years and the cut is a most-waited on tune since a few Radio pros has already got a sample of it and sitting on needles waiting on it's completion. You can learn more about our new releases and coming soon projects on our website; Visit www.quinnrecords.net

SPRING SUMMER AND THAN COME'S FALL!

by Dwight L. Quinn
This Summer you'll be hearing a lots more R&B coming out of our doors in these Summer Releases due out June,2013. Kevin of KL&R2 in particular are working on an aggressive Soul project that will almost surely put him and KL&R 2 in a demanding position.
And,James Gilbert our hot,new Recording Artist that hails from Kansas City, Missouri has already shown us what he can do. James has brought a whole new dimension and broadness to our sound and the fans are letting us know that by keeping James at the very Top of our Song Chart each week. James is expected to be releasing his second Album on the Quinn Records Label this Summer. With new and original cuts, and you guest it, it will have all of that KC "Rock" in each of the Songs along with those powerful vocal cords spurting out  soulful tunes.Oliver Johnson, the guy that brought the trumpet to soul, said that he has a bunch of new songs that he put together between gigs. Oliver will be offering a bit of both,Jazz and Soul in this package this Summer. I can't promise you how the weather is going to be out of doors but I can surely promise you that inside of Quinn Records TM, it's going to be HOT! And than comes Fall, this is the time when we usually Releases our last project for the year,i.e. October, but there's something usual about this coming October 27th, 2013 but from my perspective, it doesn't seen like it's been that long, but time doesn't lie either. This October 27th, 2013 will be marking our 42nd year in the Blues Business,"My-My Ain't It Funny How Time,Just Slips On Away?.-GO SLOW-Blues Crossing!

SUBMITTING YOUR MUSIC TO QUINN RECORDS TM

by Dwight Quinn, April 26th, 2013
Today the phone calls are a bit different than they were a few minutes back, when a promising artists would call us and ask, if we accepted unsolicited demos, and in our case the answer would always be "yes and then we would proceed on to give the caller instructions as to  how to send us the demo.
But, today the call come in asking us, do we accept unsolicited demos, and our answer is still, yes, but the different in this call is that the promising artist is now asking us can they email us a mp3 or several mp3's of their song or they would ask us to go to their website to both look and listen to their music. That process is good in one way but harmful in the other. Here's what I mean, Quinn Records TM take music very seriously, and we are always releasing new projects and in most cases with new upcoming artists. But in order to do that on a continuous bases, like year end and year out, we must have an inventory of available music. We get that available music from demos being sent in to us and we process those demos into our inventory and add the demo to our Library. Now only the demos the match our style of music gets to go into that inventory. So when each release quarter  rolls around we don't have to run around looking for new music, we already have it,and ready to go. Call it old school, but we call it resourcefulness. It's clear that technology is great for getting thing their fast, and being accessible, but that human thing that makes us different is utilizing time, each Thursday for many, many minutes we have set aside four hours( 10:00 am til 2:00 p.m) dedicated to listening to the demos that came in that week and when we hear one that meets our standards than we grab it up,process into our Library and contact the Artist with our decision, we don't mess around. We are serious, and we know that the next big act is out there somewhere and we want it. Now the guy that calls in and wants us to stop and go to there website or send us an mp3 along with the 6000 emails that we get everyday, we can't process them in that way. Email gets deleted, computers crashes and gets attacked by viruses, that's not good for neither one of us. Our physical Library don't have those kind of crises or threats, so the artists Demo is always available to us to be used in a Quinn's project.  Our newest Artist to the Quinn Records TM family of Recording Artists, James Gilbert, It's A Real Good Sign, was selected from our Library of Demos and he's doing well, but if it wasn't for our Library of Demos,he would have been over looked. So we have a Demo Policy that is good for both parties, a Demo is a File and that's the way we treat it. And that's the place where we go to four times a year when it's time to get ready for us to release a new project. So I hope that this shaded a little light on submitting your music to Quinn Records TM. Keep your Demos coming in.

Kansas City is where James Gilbert calls home.  KC has always been a key market for Blues Music and over the years Kansas City have produced some of the biggest names in  R&B/Blues music such as, Annette "Cotton Candy" Washington, Arnold "Gate mouth" Moore, and Lighting Hopkins just to name a few of the many Kansas City R&B/Blues  gurus. Blues Radio has very high standards when it comes to Blues Music, so when you see those Professionals embrace a Artist like they are doing with James Gilbert, than you better watch out, you could very well be looking at the next Little Milton Campbell,Albert King or Bobby Bland coming over the horizon, said Dwight Quinn.

It's a powerful indication from the Airway that this new Kansas City songster is about to Break. It's A Real Good Sign.
